About the Role

Our client, a major player in the mining and natural resources sector, is seeking a Legal Counsel to join their established team in Bloemfontein, Free State . This role requires a specialist with a strong understanding of mining law, environmental regulations, and corporate governance within the resources industry. You will be responsible for providing comprehensive legal support for the company's extensive operations, including advising on exploration and mining rights, regulatory compliance, contracts, and dispute resolution. The position offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work on significant projects within a key industry for South Africa. Key Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on all aspects of mining law, including prospecting rights, mining licenses, and environmental impact assessments.
• Review and draft contracts related to mining operations, such as joint venture agreements, off-take agreements, and contractor agreements.
• Ensure compliance with the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) and other relevant legislation.
• Advise on environmental law and regulatory compliance for mining activities.
• Manage legal aspects of disputes and litigation arising from mining operations.
• Conduct legal due diligence for potential acquisitions and divestitures in the mining sector.
• Liaise with government departments, regulatory bodies, and community stakeholders.
• Stay abreast of legislative changes and industry trends affecting the mining sector in Free State .
• Support corporate secretarial functions as required.

Requirements

• Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
• Minimum of 7 years' post-qualification experience, with a significant focus on mining and resources law.
• Demonstrated expertise in the MPRDA and related environmental legislation.
• Experience in drafting and negotiating mining-related contracts.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent negotiation and communication abilities.
• Ability to work effectively within a team and manage a demanding workload in Bloemfontein .
