Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Lead Bioinformatics Analyst to head the proteomics data analysis division in George, Western Cape. You will architect computational strategies for interpreting complex proteomic datasets and drive insights into disease mechanisms and targets.

You will lead a team of bioinformaticians, collaborate with experimental biologists, and contribute to publications while leveraging high-throughput mass spectrometry data and HPC resources to advance research.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or equivalent in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, or related quantitative field.
• 7+ years of progressive experience in bioinformatics with a focus on proteomics data analysis.
• Expertise in mass spectrometry data analysis with MaxQuant, Proteome Discoverer, or equivalents.
• Proficient in Python, R, Perl and libraries such as Bioconductor, SciPy, NumPy.
• Strong knowledge of statistical modeling, hypothesis testing and ML in biology.
• Experience with protein databases (UniProt, PDB) and pathway tools (GO, KEGG).
• Proven leadership and mentoring ability; strong communication skills.
• Experience with HPC environments is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Lead analysis of large-scale proteomics datasets (LC-MS/MS, ABPP, chemoproteomics).
• Develop computational pipelines for protein identification and quantification.
• Apply advanced statistical and ML methods to identify patterns, biomarkers, and pathways.
• Collaborate with experimental teams to design studies and interpret results.
• Manage and mentor a team of bioinformatics analysts.
• Contribute to manuscripts, grant proposals, and internal reports.
• Maintain and update bioinformatics tools and databases; evaluate new technologies.
• Ensure data integrity, reproducibility, and compliance with standards.
