Placements24 seeks a Lead Operations Geologist to provide real-time geological support for drilling operations, optimizing well placement, and ensuring geological objectives are met safely and efficiently.

You will work closely with drilling engineers and geoscientists to make critical geological decisions during live operations, mentor junior staff, and help maintain subsurface data integrity in Mahikeng, North West, ZA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Geology or Earth Sciences; Master's degree preferred.
• 5–8 years of experience in operational geology, including wellsite geology.
• Experience in real-time geological decision-making during drilling.
• Strong understanding of formation evaluation techniques and tools.
• Familiarity with geological modeling software and well correlation.
• Excellent analytical and communication skills.
• Commitment to safety and operational integrity.
• Experience in the North West, ZA region is beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Provide real-time geological support and monitoring during drilling operations.
• Make timely and accurate geological interpretations and recommendations to the drilling team.
• Oversee the acquisition and evaluation of formation evaluation data (e.g., LWD/MWD, cores, cuttings).
• Ensure wellbore placement targets are met and geological hazards are identified and managed.
• Collaborate with geoscientists and reservoir engineers to update geological models based on new data.
• Prepare daily geological reports and end-of-well geological summaries.
• Mentor and guide junior wellsite geologists.
• Ensure adherence to health, safety, and environmental procedures at the wellsite.
• Participate in pre-drill planning meetings and post-well reviews.
