Job summary

Placements24 in Vereeniging, Gauteng, seeks a highly experienced Lead Microbiologist to manage laboratory operations within the food safety and quality assurance sector. You will lead a team of microbiologists and technicians, overseeing testing of raw materials, finished products, and environmental samples to ensure timely, reliable results.

The role requires deep knowledge of foodborne pathogens, ISO/HACCP standards, data interpretation, and the development of robust testing strategies.

Qualifications

MSc or PhD in Microbiology, Food Science, or a related field required.
Minimum 6 years in a food industry microbiology lab with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
Strong knowledge of foodborne pathogens, spoilage organisms, and microbial ecology.
Proficiency in plating, enrichment, PCR and molecular methods.
Experience with LIMS and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

Oversee daily laboratory operations and ensure timely results.
Develop, validate, and implement microbiological testing methods for materials and products.
Identify pathogens and spoilage organisms and interpret data for reports.
Lead and mentor microbiologists and technicians, providing training and performance feedback.
Investigate OOS results and implement corrective actions.
Contribute to risk assessments and food safety plans.
