Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Principal Computational Biologist to lead advanced analyses across genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and clinical data. This fully remote role within South Africa offers flexibility to work from anywhere in the country and to shape research strategy.

Responsibilities include developing ML models, building bioinformatics pipelines, mentoring junior scientists, and collaborating with biologists and data scientists to deliver biomarker discoveries and therapeutic

Qualifications

• PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, CS, Statistics, or related field
• 8+ years of experience in computational biology or related discipline
• Expertise in Python, R, and/or C++
• Proficiency with ML libraries (scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch)
• Strong statistical modeling, hypothesis testing, and experimental design
• NGS data analysis experience is essential
• Experience building complex computational workflows and algorithms
• Excellent communication and mentoring skills
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) desirable

Responsibilities

• Develop and apply advanced computational and statistical methods to analyze complex biological datasets (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, etc.)
• Design and implement machine learning models for predictive analytics, classification, and clustering
• Collaborate with experimental biologists and bioinformaticians to interpret data and generate biological insights
• Identify and validate biomarkers and therapeutic targets through data-driven approaches
• Develop and maintain robust bioinformatics pipelines and software tools
• Lead computational biology aspects of research projects from conception to completion
• Mentor junior computational biologists and data scientists
• Stay abreast of latest advancements in computational biology, machine learning, and bioinformatics
• Contribute to scientific strategy and direction of research programs
• Author and co-author high-impact publications and present findings at conferences
