Placements24 seeks a Lead Automotive Powertrain Engineer in Cape Town, SA, a hybrid role combining in-office collaboration with remote flexibility. The role requires a strong background in powertrain design, analysis and validation, plus leadership experience and proficiency in GT-SUITE, MATLAB/Simulink and CAD tools.

Qualifications

• Master's or Ph.D. in Mechanical/Automotive Engineering.
• 10+ years in automotive powertrain development.
• Leadership or supervisory experience (≥3 years).
• Experience with EV/ICE tech and powertrain simulations.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, development, and optimization of powertrain systems (electric, hybrid, ICE).
• Direct and manage a team of powertrain engineers with mentorship and feedback.
• Develop and execute testing and validation plans for powertrain components.

About the Role

Our client, a leader in automotive innovation, is seeking a dynamic and experienced Lead Automotive Powertrain Engineer to join their esteemed engineering division in Cape Town, Western Cape, ZA. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and optimization of automotive powertrain systems, including electric, hybrid, and traditional internal combustion engines.
• Direct and manage a team of powertrain engineers, providing technical leadership, mentorship, and performance feedback.
• Develop and execute comprehensive testing and validation plans for powertrain components and systems.
• Conduct detailed simulations and analyses (e.g., CFD, FEA) to evaluate performance, durability, and emissions.
• Collaborate with supply chain and manufacturing to ensure the manufacturability and cost-effectiveness of powertrain designs.
• Stay current with emerging powertrain technologies, market trends, and regulatory requirements.
• Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation for senior management and stakeholders.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues related to powertrain performance and integration.
• Contribute to the strategic planning of future powertrain technologies and product roadmaps.
• Ensure all designs comply with relevant industry standards, safety regulations, and environmental mandates.

Requirements

• Master's or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related discipline.
• 10+ years of progressive experience in automotive powertrain development, with at least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
• In-depth knowledge of electric vehicle powertrains (motors, inverters, battery management systems) and/or advanced internal combustion engine technologies.
• Proficiency in powertrain simulation software (GT-SUITE, AVL Concerto, MATLAB/Simulink, ANSYS) and CAD tools.
• Strong understanding of control systems, thermodynamics, and vehicle dynamics.
• Experience with DVP&R (Design Verification Plan and Report) development and execution.
• Excellent project management and communication skills.
• Ability to effectively lead and motivate a technical team.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a hybrid work environment.
• Experience with automotive industry standards (e.g., ISO 26262, SAE).
