Placements24 is seeking a Lead Automation Engineer for our client in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. You will design, implement and maintain sophisticated ICS-based control systems for critical energy infrastructure.

You will lead a team of automation specialists, drive PLC/DCS programming, SCADA, HMI development, and network architecture while ensuring cybersecurity and system reliability. The role blends leadership with hands-on engineering in a hybrid work setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Computer Eng or Mechatronics.
• 8+ years in industrial automation with ICS focus.
• Proven PLC/DCS programming experience.
• Strong SCADA, HMI, and networking knowledge.
• Experience with energy sector preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and implementation of industrial automation and control systems (PLC, DCS, SCADA).
• Oversee programming, configuration, and troubleshooting of control systems from multiple vendors.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
• Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in industrial automation engineering, with a strong focus onICS.
• Demonstrated expertise in PLC programming (e.g., Ladder Logic, Structured Text) and DCS configuration.
• In-depth knowledge of SCADA systems, HMI development, and industrial networking protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP).
• Experience with cybersecurity for industrial control systems is highly desirable.
• Strong leadership, project management, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, with experience presenting technical solutions.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and manage multiple priorities.
• Experience within the energy sector (e.g., power generation, oil & gas) is a significant advantage.
