Job summary

Alfred H Knight invites applications for three Laboratory Analysts to join the Richards Bay Laboratory team. The role focuses on strict adherence to documented methods and GLP, ensuring high accuracy and precision in all analyses, particularly with XRF techniques for minerals and coal.

The ideal candidate will have Grade 12 with Math/Science, plus an Analytical Chemistry degree or diploma and at least 2 years of lab experience, including XRF work. A commitment to safety and quality is essential.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science.
• Analytical Chemistry degree or diploma.
• Minimum 2 years of analytical lab experience with XRF fused bead preparation and XRF operation.
• Experience in minerals and coal analysis.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a high degree of accuracy and precision per documented methods and GLP.
• Follow documented methods; inform Senior Analyst of non-compliance.
• Manage workload to optimize time and resources.
• Maintain auditable and traceable records and data.
• Perform instrument calibrations and routine checks.
• Ensure health, safety and ISO 17025/SANAS compliance.

To be successful at Alfred H Knight the incumbent will need to display the following:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND WORK EXPERIENCE

In this role you will be responsible to

• Ensure at all times that a high degree of accuracy and precision is applied to methods and procedures through incorporating and promoting good laboratory practice principles
• Ensure that work throughput is followed in accordance with documented methods and procedures. It is the post holder’s responsibility to inform the Senior Analyst of any failure in compliance to documented methods
• Carry out the workload that is assigned to you and manage through the most cost-effective utilization of time and resources
• Advise the Senior Analyst of repetitive technical problems relating to day-to-day analytical procedures and standard operating practices
• Maintain records and laboratory data such that work is clearly and easily auditable and traceable
• Process analytical data unsupervised in preparation of results being reported
• Ensure the confidentiality of all results at all times
• Ensure laboratory equipment and instruments are well maintained at all times with faulty equipment being brought to the attention of the Senior Analyst immediately
• Perform routine maintenance of equipment as instructed by the Senior Analyst
• Perform instrument calibrations when required, routinely performing instrument checks and recording all relevant data, as instructed by the Senior Analyst
• Ensure that all laboratory work areas and workstations are kept clean and tidy, i.e. Good Housekeeping
• Ensure that the Company’s Health & Safety policy is applied effectively in areas under the Post Holder’s control
• Uphold ISO 17025 / SANAS Accreditation requirements

Required Competencies

• Good knowledge and understanding of ISO 17025 requirements
• Computer literacy
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Handle pressure well, exercises good judgment and handles challenges in a mature manner
• Ability to manage own time effectively, whilst working to tight deadlines
• Ability to work with minimum supervision and under pressure
• Effective team working and interpersonal skills
• Good attention to detail
• No criminal record
