Kitchen Assistant Position – Haven Old Age Home

Location: Woodstock, Cape Town. Reports to the Manager.

Overview

The Haven Night Shelter Organisation offers social work services, rehabilitation opportunities, family reunification services, physical care and support to adult people living on the streets who are committed to reintegration. The Haven Old Age Home requires a Kitchen Assistant.

Responsibilities

• Properly cleaning and sanitising all food preparation areas according to established standards of hygiene.
• Washing and appropriately storing all cooking appliances, instruments, utensils, cutting boards, and dishes.
• Preparation of meal ingredients, including washing, cleaning, peeling, cutting, and chopping fruit, vegetables, poultry, and meat.
• Sweeping and mopping the kitchen floors and wiping down kitchen walls.
• Assisting with the unloading of delivered food supplies.
• Organising and correctly storing food supplies.
• Promptly transferring meal ingredients from storage areas to the kitchen as per the Cook’s instructions.

Qualifications

Reside in the area close to the shelter or in the surrounding areas.

• Chef’s diploma or professional cookery certificate / food preparation programmes obtained through an accredited chef school.
• Minimum of 1 year previous kitchen work experience.
• Ability to work shifts and alternate weekends.
• Sound knowledge of food safety regulations.
• Understanding of the importance of health and safety.
• Ability to interact with clients from different cultures and religions.
• Conflict‑management skills.
• Excellent verbal communication skills.
• Team‑player attitude.
• Of sober habits, no criminal record, good health.
• Experience in the NGO sector is an advantage.
