With its iconic oceanfront setting and reputation as one of Cape Town’s most loved hotels, The President Hotel operates at scale. Our Engineering and Maintenance team plays a critical role in ensuring uninterrupted comfort and operational reliability across the property.
We are seeking a Junior Air Conditioning Technician to join our Engineering team. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years’ practical experience in air conditioning, refrigeration, HVAC maintenance, or experience gained through a recognised internship or apprenticeship programme. Experience within hotels, healthcare facilities, commercial buildings, large residential developments or other high-volume building environments.
This is a developmental role designed for someone who already has practical exposure to HVAC systems and is looking to further develop their technical skills and trade knowledge. You will support the daily maintenance, fault finding, repair and basic installation of air conditioning and ventilation systems throughout the hotel.

- NQF Level 3 or equivalent in Refrigeration / Air Conditioning, or currently enrolled in a recognised trade programme
- Technical or vocational HVAC training preferred
- Minimum 2 years’ practical experience in air conditioning, refrigeration, HVAC maintenance, an internship or apprenticeship programme
- Experience within hospitality, healthcare, commercial buildings, large residential developments or similar high-volume environments advantageous
- Basic understanding of HVAC systems, tools and equipment
- Basic knowledge of components including filters, coils, condensers, compressors, motors, thermostats and ductwork
- Physically fit and able to work at heights, in ceiling spaces and confined areas
- Strong safety awareness and understanding of the correct use of PPE
- Ability to work within a busy, operational environment
- Valid South African ID

Key Responsibilities
Routine Maintenance & Support
- Assist with regular inspections and maintenance of air conditioning and ventilation systems throughout the hotel
- Assist with the maintenance of filters, coils, condensers, compressors, motors, thermostats and ductwork
- Clean and replace filters, grills and air vents in guest rooms and public areas
- Monitor equipment performance and report unusual noises, poor airflow, temperature inconsistencies or potential system failures
- Ensure work areas are left clean, safe and operational after maintenance has been completed
- Support senior technicians in diagnosing HVAC faults and carrying out minor repairs under supervision
- Assist in identifying and addressing common system issues, including poor airflow, refrigerant problems and electrical malfunctions
- Develop practical fault finding skills under the guidance of experienced technicians
- Report faults or repairs requiring senior technical intervention promptly
Preventive Maintenance
- Participate in the hotel’s planned preventive maintenance programme
- Complete required maintenance checklists accurately and on time
- Assist with recording completed tasks on OMNI or relevant internal maintenance systems
- Identify potential maintenance concerns before they result in equipment failure or disruption to hotel operations
- Maintain clean and organised service areas following job completion
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all hotel and Engineering Department safety procedures
- Take particular care when working with electrical systems, refrigerants, equipment at height or within confined spaces
- Use the correct PPE at all times
- Follow lock out/tag out procedures when working on isolated equipment
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment or potential hazards to a supervisor
Tools & Equipment Care
- Use tools and equipment correctly and responsibly
- Ensure tools are cleaned and returned to their designated storage areas after use
- Report missing, faulty or damaged equipment immediately
- Assist with transporting and organising tools, equipment and spare parts required for maintenance jobs
- Help maintain an organised and safe working environment
Guest Room Protocol
- Follow hotel procedures when carrying out maintenance in occupied or vacant guest rooms
- Enter guest rooms only when authorised or accompanied by the appropriate team member
- Announce yourself clearly and maintain professional conduct when entering guest areas
- Protect furniture, flooring and guest belongings while completing maintenance work
- Ensure tools and equipment do not obstruct guest access
- Leave all guest areas clean and presentable following maintenance work
Teamwork & Communication
- Work closely with senior HVAC technicians and the wider Engineering and Maintenance team
- Communicate clearly with supervisors regarding work in progress, completed tasks and outstanding maintenance requirements
- Report technical concerns and potential system failures promptly
- Participate in technical training, toolbox talks and departmental briefings
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn from experienced team members and continuously develop technical knowledge
