Job summary

The CSIR invites applications for an internship in the Nano-Micro Manufacturing Facility (NMMF) within the Chemicals Cluster, based in Pretoria, Gauteng. The role provides graduates with hands-on research experience in microfluidic and diagnostic device development under senior researchers, in cross-functional teams.

Interns will gain exposure to fabrication, testing, data analysis and technical reporting, with emphasis on safety and quality procedures within a leading national research

Qualifications

• BSc/Advanced Diploma in physics, industrial physics, electronic engineering or related.
• Experience in physics, electronics or instrumentation research.
• Strong problem-solving ability and ability to work independently.

Responsibilities

• Assist in designing microfluidic and lab-on-chip diagnostic devices using COMSOL.
• Support prototyping, testing and industry engagement with NMMF users.
• Fabrication, assembly and testing of prototype PDMS-based diagnostic devices.
• Optimize flow properties, channel geometries and surface activation for lab-on-chip devices.
• Assist with basic electronic/instrumentation activities, including circuit designs and sensor measurements.
• Collect, analyse and present experimental data, participate in research meetings and contribute to reports.
• Follow occupational health, safety, environmental and quality-control requirements.
