Job summary

Hulamin in Pietermaritzburg seeks a skilled instrumentation and control technician to optimise plant reliability in Foil Rolling. You will calibrate, maintain, and fault-find automation systems, PLCs, SCADA/DCS, and drive systems to support product quality and uptime.

Working with Operations and OEMs, you will develop SOPs, train teams, and lead maintenance shutdowns with careful spare planning and validation.

Qualifications

• Maintain, calibrate, optimise instrumentation and control systems across Foil Rolling equipment.
• Provide technical support for Rolling Mill Level 1 systems and measurement instruments.
• Fault-find and repair PLCs, SCADA/DCS, drives, field instruments and networks.
• Analyse trends to identify deviations and corrective actions.
• Complete scheduled inspections and calibrations with technical records.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and calibrate instrumentation and control systems on Foil Rolling equipment.
• Support Rolling Mill Level 1 systems and measurement systems.
• Perform fault-finding and repairs on PLCs, SCADA/DCS, drives and field instruments.
• Plan and support maintenance shutdowns and start-up verification.

PURPOSE OF ROLE

To optimise plant reliability and product quality through effective monitoring, calibration, maintenance, fault-finding and improvement of instrumentation, automation and control systems within Foil Rolling.

Key Performance Areas And Responsibilities

• Maintain, calibrate, optimise and support instrumentation and control systems across Foil Rolling equipment.


• Provide technical support for Rolling Mill Level 1 systems, surface inspection systems, thickness/profile/contour measurement systems, flatness control systems and infrared temperature measurement systems.


• Conduct fault-finding and repairs on PLCs, SCADA/DCS systems, AC/DC drives, field instruments, actuators and industrial networks.


• Analyse equipment and process trends to identify deviations, potential failures and corrective or preventative actions.


• Complete scheduled inspections, MAXIMO checklists, statutory checks, calibrations and associated technical records.


• Respond to breakdowns, implement short-term recovery actions and develop sustainable long-term solutions.


• Plan and support maintenance shutdowns, including work scoping, spares identification, quality checks and start-up verification.


• Lead or participate in automation, instrumentation and equipment improvement projects, upgrades and commissioning.


• Develop and update SOPs, fault-finding guides and technical training material, and coach maintenance and operational teams.


• Work collaboratively with Operations, Process, Maintenance, suppliers and OEMs to improve safety, quality, reliability and process performance.
