Apex Academic Centre is seeking in-person tutors to cover the Western Cape. You choose the areas you travel to and the hours you work; we provide the learners. Sessions occur at the learner's home, with curricula including CAPS, IEB, Cambridge and Edexcel, across grades 1–12, including matric.

As an independent contractor, you set your own hours, and travel radius. Verification and safety checks apply, and communication runs through the platform. This is ongoing coverage across the province.

In-Person Tutor, Western Cape

Apex Academic Centre is looking for in-person tutors across the Western Cape, through the Cape Town metro and the surrounding areas. You choose the areas you travel to and the hours you work, we bring you the learners.

Location: Western Cape, Cape Town and surrounds

Level: Grades 1 to 12, Including matric

This is an ongoing opening covering the province. In-person requests reach us regularly and the limit is almost never the subject, it is finding a verified tutor who will genuinely travel to that particular area.

About the role

Western Cape demand is spread across a metro that is geographically awkward, from the City Bowl and the Southern Suburbs out to the Northern Suburbs, the Helderberg and the West Coast. A tutor who is realistic about their radius is far more useful to us than one who says they will go anywhere and then declines every request.

Lessons happen at the learner's home. You are matched through MyAPEX on subject, curriculum, availability and the areas you have said you will travel to, and you accept or decline each request. Many tutors combine in-person learners nearby with online work elsewhere.

What you would be doing

1. Travelling to the learner and teaching one to one in their home, in the subjects and grades you have listed on your profile.

2. Setting your travel radius honestly. In the Cape the distance between two suburbs is often less relevant than the road between them, and a realistic radius protects both you and the family.

3. Teaching to the school's own programme. Western Cape schools vary widely in pace and in what they set, so ask for the learner's term planner rather than assuming a standard CAPS or IEB sequence.

4. Arriving when you said you would. A family has planned the afternoon around the session, and a tutor who is unpredictable about time loses the placement long before a tutor who is merely average at the subject.

5. Observing the professional boundaries set out in the Tutor Terms, which apply with particular force once you are working inside a family's home.

6. Keeping communication on the platform. All lesson communication and homework runs through MyAPEX, which is how Apex keeps a record for the parent and the learner.

What we need from you

• A relevant teaching qualification, typically a BEd or a PGCE, or a degree in your subject area.
• Your own reliable transport, and a clear view of which parts of the Western Cape you will genuinely travel to.
• An advantage, not a requirement: SACE registration. Many of the strongest tutors are graduates, postgraduates or subject specialists rather than registered schoolteachers. Where you do hold SACE registration, Apex verifies it and shows it on your profile, and parents do look for it.
• A valid police clearance certificate. This is required for in-person tutoring, because the lesson happens in a home or a shared venue. It matters more, not less, when you are in the room.
• Solid subject knowledge in the grades you list. Mathematics and the Sciences are the most requested, but every core subject comes up.
• Consistency week to week. Progress in a home tutoring arrangement comes from the sessions that actually happen, not the ones that were booked.
• Helpful but not required: Afrikaans as a teaching language, which a number of Western Cape families ask for, and willingness to tutor online as well.

What Apex verifies before your first lesson

Verification is a condition of engagement

Apex verifies who you are and what you are qualified to teach before you take a booking. A self-declaration is not enough, which is why we ask for documents rather than assurances. What is checked depends on how you teach: in-person tutoring carries one additional requirement, because the lesson happens face to face.

• Identity. Your ID or passport, and that the name on it matches your qualifications
• Qualifications. The certificates behind the subjects and levels you want to teach
• Police clearance. Required for in-person tutoring
• SACE and other credentials. Verified and shown on your profile where you hold them, as an advantage rather than a requirement
• Equipment. Machine, camera, connection and teaching room

You are matched on subject, curriculum and the hours you have actually marked as available. You accept or decline each request.

Payment

Paid on the 2nd

Tutor fees are paid monthly, on the 2nd of the month, per lesson actually delivered. If a date falls on a weekend or public holiday, it moves to the next business day.

You set the hours

No minimum, no fixed timetable. You tutor as an independent contractor and you decide how much work you take.

Questions tutors ask before applying

Do I need to send a CV?

No. Applications are made through MyAPEX, where you build a tutor profile once: your subjects, your curricula, your qualifications and your availability. Apex no longer accepts CVs or applications by email, because the profile is what parents read when they choose a tutor.

Is this a job or contract work?

Apex tutors are independent contractors, not employees. You set your own hours, you accept the bookings you want, and you are responsible for your own tax and statutory obligations. This is set out in the Tutor Terms and Conditions you accept when you register.

How are learners matched to me?

On the subjects and grades you list, your stated availability, and the areas you have said you will travel to. Every request comes to you to accept or decline, so you are never allocated a learner you did not agree to.

Do families ask for lessons in Afrikaans?

Some do. If you can teach your subject in Afrikaans as well as English, say so on your profile, because it is a real differentiator in this province.

Should I offer online lessons as well?

It is worth it. The Cape metro is spread out, so a tutor who offers both can keep a small cluster of nearby in-person learners and fill the rest of the week online without driving.

What happens after I apply?

You complete your profile on MyAPEX and upload your documents. Apex verifies them, and once you are cleared your profile goes live and you start receiving matched requests in your subjects. You are not charged anything to apply or to be listed.
