This is an ongoing opening covering the whole province. In-person requests reach us constantly and the constraint is almost never the subject, it is finding a verified tutor who is genuinely willing to travel to that particular suburb.

About the role

Gauteng is where most of Apex's in-person demand sits, and it is spread right across the province rather than concentrated in a few suburbs. Families ask for in-person tutoring for reasons that online cannot always solve: a younger learner who cannot hold attention on a screen, a household without reliable connectivity, or a learner who simply works better with someone in the room.

Lessons happen at the learner's home. You are matched through MyAPEX on subject, curriculum, availability and the areas you have said you will travel to, and you accept or decline each request. Many tutors combine a few in-person learners nearby with online work elsewhere.

What you would be doing

1. Travelling to the learner and teaching one to one in their home, in the subjects and grades you have listed on your profile.

2. Setting the area you actually cover, honestly. Gauteng traffic makes a suburb that looks close on a map an hour away at four in the afternoon, and over-committing on travel is the most common reason an in-person placement fails.

3. Working to the learner's curriculum, most often CAPS or IEB, and to the school's own programme and assessment dates rather than a generic course.

4. Being reliable about time. A parent has arranged the household around your session, and in-person lateness is far more disruptive than online lateness.

5. Keeping to the professional boundaries in the Tutor Terms, including conducting yourself appropriately in a family home.

6. Keeping communication on the platform. All lesson communication and homework runs through MyAPEX, which is how Apex keeps a record for the parent and the learner.

What we need from you

A relevant teaching qualification, typically a BEd or a PGCE, or a degree in your subject area.

Your own reliable transport, and a clear view of which areas of Gauteng you will genuinely travel to.

An advantage, not a requirement: SACE registration. Many of the strongest tutors are graduates, postgraduates or subject specialists rather than registered schoolteachers. Where you do hold SACE registration, Apex verifies it and shows it on your profile, and parents do look for it.

A valid police clearance certificate. This is required for in-person tutoring, because the lesson happens in a home or a shared venue. It matters more, not less, when you are in the room.

Solid subject knowledge in the grades you list. Mathematics and the Sciences are the most requested, but every core subject comes up.

Reliability above everything. Learners and parents plan around your confirmed sessions.

Helpful but not required: willingness to tutor online as well, which widens the requests that reach you considerably.

What Apex verifies before your first lesson

Verification is a condition of engagement

Apex verifies who you are and what you are qualified to teach before you take a booking. A self-declaration is not enough, which is why we ask for documents rather than assurances. What is checked depends on how you teach: in-person tutoring carries one additional requirement, because the lesson happens face to face.

• Identity. Your ID or passport, and that the name on it matches your qualifications
• Qualifications. The certificates behind the subjects and levels you want to teach
• Police clearance. Required for in-person tutoring
• SACE and other credentials. Verified and shown on your profile where you hold them, as an advantage rather than a requirement
• Equipment. Machine, camera, connection and teaching room

You are matched on subject, curriculum and the hours you have actually marked as available. You accept or decline each request.

Payment

Paid on the 2nd

Tutor fees are paid monthly, on the 2nd of the month, per lesson actually delivered. If a date falls on a weekend or public holiday, it moves to the next business day.

You set the hours

No minimum, no fixed timetable. You tutor as an independent contractor and you decide how much work you take.

Questions tutors ask before applying

Do I need to send a CV?

No. Applications are made through MyAPEX, where you build a tutor profile once: your subjects, your curricula, your qualifications and your availability. Apex no longer accepts CVs or applications by email, because the profile is what parents read when they choose a tutor.

Is this a job or contract work?

Apex tutors are independent contractors, not employees. You set your own hours, you accept the bookings you want, and you are responsible for your own tax and statutory obligations. This is set out in the Tutor Terms and Conditions you accept when you register.

How do you decide which learners I am offered?

On subject, curriculum, your stated availability and the areas you have said you cover. You see the request and accept or decline it. Nothing is allocated to you without your agreement.

Can I do both in-person and online?

Yes, and most tutors do. In-person work near home and online work anywhere is the combination that fills a week most reliably. You set both on your profile.

Is travel time paid?

Tutor fees are for lessons delivered. Travel is why choosing your areas realistically matters, and why most in-person tutors build a cluster of learners close together rather than crossing the province.

What happens after I apply?

You complete your profile on MyAPEX and upload your documents. Apex verifies them, and once you are cleared your profile goes live and you start receiving matched requests in your subjects. You are not charged anything to apply or to be listed.
