Placements24 is seeking a Research Chemist in Mossel Bay to design and execute multi-step synthetic routes for novel organic molecules. You will perform a variety of reactions, purify products, and characterize compounds using NMR, MS, IR, and related techniques. Collaboration with medicinal chemists and biologists will be essential to support drug discovery.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or Master's in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or closely related field.
• Demonstrated experience in synthetic organic chemistry with a strong publication record or equivalent.
• Proficiency in a wide range of organic reactions and purification techniques.
• Experience with analytical techniques for compound characterization (NMR, MS).
• Ability to design synthetic routes and troubleshoot experimental problems.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
• Willingness to work effectively in a hybrid environment with lab and remote responsibilities.
• Experience in pharmaceutical R&D is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Design and execute multi-step synthetic routes for target organic molecules.
• Perform various organic reactions, including coupling, asymmetric synthesis, and heterocyclic chemistry.
• Purify reaction products using chromatography and crystallization techniques.
• Characterize synthesized compounds using NMR, Mass Spectrometry (MS), IR, and other methods.
• Optimize reaction conditions to improve yield, purity, and efficiency.
• Collaborate with medicinal chemists and biologists to support drug discovery programs.
• Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records.
• Stay updated on latest developments in synthetic organic chemistry.
• Troubleshoot synthetic challenges and propose alternative strategies.
• Contribute to preparation of research reports and publications.
