Job summary

DRA Global seeks an experienced Project HSE Manager - Mining to lead HSE activities across project sites in South Africa. You will partner with Construction and Project Managers, contractors and site teams to ensure compliance with legislation, project requirements and DRA standards.

Responsibilities include audits, incident investigations, risk management, and coaching on safe behaviours to prevent unsafe conditions and halt work when necessary.

Qualifications

• SAMTRAC or equivalent certification, Incident Investigation Training, Risk Management Training, Legal Liability, Underground Blasting Ticket and Competency A & B - all essential.
• National Diploma in Safety Management or equivalent - essential.
• Shift Supervisor/Mine Overseer Certificate of Competency - essential.
• SACPCMP registration or other recognised professional HSE affiliation - advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day HSE across project sites, guiding management, supervisors, contractors and suppliers.
• Ensure compliance with legislation, project HSE specs, client requirements and DRA standards.
• Plan, conduct and coordinate HSE audits; monitor action plans and close corrective actions.
• Coordinate incident investigations, health monitoring and environmental compliance; address findings.
• Implement risk management processes including behavioural observations and event reporting.
• Lead and oversee HSE personnel to ensure daily inspections and onboarding.
• Coordinate HSE objectives, indicators, reporting and records; address trends with action plans.
• Coach site teams to promote safe behaviours and halt unsafe work when necessary.

The successful candidate will drive effective risk management, enhance contractor performance and foster a proactive safety culture throughout site operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage day-to-day HSE activities across project sites, providing practical guidance to construction management, supervisors, contractors and suppliers.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, project HSE specifications, client requirements and DRA standards across all site operations.
• Plan, conduct and coordinate project and contractor HSE audits; monitor action plans, identify negative trends and ensure timely closure of corrective actions.
• Coordinate incident investigations, health and hygiene monitoring, and environmental compliance, ensuring all findings, deviations and corrective measures are properly addressed.
• Implement and maintain robust risk management processes including behavioural observations, event reporting and planned task observations throughout the project.
• Lead and oversee DRA and contractor HSE personnel to ensure completion of daily inspections, onboarding requirements and designated HSE activities.
• Coordinate HSE objectives, targets, leading and lagging indicators, reporting and project records, proactively addressing identified trends through action plans.
• Engage actively with site teams to coach safe behaviours and intervene decisively where unsafe conditions or at-risk behaviours necessitate work to be halted and reassessed.

• National Diploma in Safety Management or equivalent - essential.

Experience

• Minimum of 10 years' project-related HSE experience, including at least 5 years in an HSE management role and 5 years managing HSE in underground mining environments.
• At least 3 years' contractor HSE management experience within an EPCM/EPC environment - essential.

Essential Knowledge Areas

• Comprehensive understanding of HSE legislation, standards and disciplines, including risk management, contractor HSE management and incident investigation.
• Strong report writing, record keeping and objective HSE auditing skills, with a sound working knowledge of project management principles including schedule, quality and cost control.
• Proficient use of spreadsheets, databases, Microsoft Word and relevant HSE software; familiarity with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards is advantageous.
