Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a qualified Substation Technician for our client in Mahikeng, North West. The role covers maintenance, testing, and repair of high‑voltage substation equipment to ensure reliable power delivery and grid stability.

You will diagnose faults, perform preventative maintenance, install and commission new equipment, and respond to emergencies while following strict safety and LOTO procedures.

Qualifications

• National Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current) or equivalent trade qualification.
• Minimum 4 years' experience as Substation Technician or similar HV role.
• Experience with testing and maintenance of substation equipment.
• Strong HV safety procedures and LOTO knowledge.
• Proficient with HV test equipment (TTR testers, insulation resistance testers, relay test sets).
• Ability to read electrical schematics and blueprints.
• Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance, inspection, and testing of substation equipment.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical faults within the substation.
• Install, modify, and commission new substation equipment.
• Respond to emergency call-outs to restore power.
• Maintain records of maintenance activities and equipment status.
• Adhere to safety procedures and electrical codes while working with high-voltage systems.
• Collaborate with engineers and other technicians on projects.
• Ensure substation grounds and equipment are kept clean and organized.
