Placements24 is seeking a proactive Geothermal Energy Project Developer for a hybrid role based in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. You will identify, evaluate and advance geothermal projects from conception to financial close, including feasibility studies, land rights, stakeholder engagement, and business case development.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years in project development within renewables or geothermal, strong regulatory knowledge, and experience with project finance and contracts.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Earth Sciences required, with master's preferred.
• Minimum 5 years in project development, ideally in renewables or geothermal.
• Proven track record from inception to financial close.

Responsibilities

• Identify and evaluate geothermal energy project sites and feasibility.
• Conduct resource assessment and preliminary design.
• Develop detailed project plans, budgets and timelines.
• Secure permits, licenses, and land rights.
• Engage with communities, government agencies and stakeholders.

About the Role Our client is seeking a proactive and experienced Geothermal Energy Project Developer to join their innovative team based in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, ZA . This hybrid role allows for a blend of on-site project engagement and remote work flexibility. You will be instrumental in identifying, evaluating, and advancing new geothermal energy projects from conception through to financial close and construction. This includes conducting feasibility studies, securing land rights, engaging with stakeholders, and developing business cases for geothermal development. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of the geothermal resource sector, project finance, and regulatory landscapes. You will play a key role in expanding our client's renewable energy portfolio and contributing to sustainable energy solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Identify and evaluate potential geothermal energy project sites
• Conduct feasibility studies, including resource assessment and preliminary design
• Develop detailed project plans, budgets, and timelines
• Secure necessary permits, licenses, and land rights
• Engage with local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders
• Develop and negotiate power purchase agreements (PPAs) and other commercial contracts
• Secure project financing and manage relationships with investors and lenders
• Oversee the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) process for selected projects
• Monitor project development progress and manage risks
• Stay informed about technological advancements and market trends in geothermal energy

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Geological, Mechanical), Earth Sciences, or a related field; Master's degree preferred
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in project development, preferably within the renewable energy or geothermal sector
• Demonstrated success in developing energy projects from inception to financial close
• Strong understanding of geothermal resource exploration, assessment, and power plant technologies
• Experience with project finance, contract negotiation, and stakeholder engagement
• Excellent analytical, business development, and problem-solving skills
• Strong written and verbal communication and presentation abilities
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work effectively in a hybrid environment
• Familiarity with South African energy policy and regulatory frameworks
• Willingness to travel for site assessments and stakeholder meetings
