Job summary

MECS Africa is seeking a mid- to senior-level Geotechnical Engineer for a large underground copper mining operation in South Africa. You will lead ground control, rock mass characterization, and geotechnical modelling to support safe and efficient mine design and operations.

The role requires 3–10 years of underground geotechnical experience, proficiency with deep-level mining methods, and a strong focus on safety and risk management.

Qualifications

• Degree in mining/geotechnical engineering or related field.
• Postgraduate rock mechanics/geotechnical qualification preferred.
• Professional registration with a recognized body preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP).
• Assess ground conditions and recommend ground support systems.
• Conduct geotechnical inspections of underground workings and identify hazards.
• Investigate rockfalls, rockbursts, and geotechnical incidents.
• Ensure compliance with mining regulations and standards.
• Provide geotechnical input to stope, pillar, and long-term planning.
• Collaborate with geology, survey, safety, and operations teams.
• Prepare geotechnical reports and contribute to feasibility studies.
