Placements24 is seeking an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to join our Stellenbosch practice. You will lead geotechnical investigations, analyze soil properties, and design foundations for diverse projects in the Western Cape.

The role requires a MSc/MEng in Geotechnical Engineering, Pr Eng registration with ECSA, and a minimum of 7 years of progressive experience. Proficiency in PLAXIS and GeoStudio is essential. Valid driver’s license for site visits is preferred.

About the Role

Our client, a highly respected civil engineering firm, is looking for a dedicated Geotechnical Engineer to join their established practice in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. This role focuses on the critical aspects of foundation design, soil mechanics, and ground engineering for a diverse range of construction projects, from residential developments to large commercial structures. You will be instrumental in assessing ground conditions, advising on appropriate foundation solutions, and mitigating geotechnical risks throughout the project lifecycle within the unique geological landscape of Stellenbosch area.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive geotechnical investigations, including site reconnaissance and detailed subsurface exploration programs.
• Analyze soil and rock properties through laboratory and in-situ testing.
• Perform detailed design of shallow and deep foundations, retaining walls, and slope stabilization measures.
• Prepare geotechnical investigation reports, design recommendations, and construction supervision guidelines.
• Provide expert advice on geotechnical aspects to project teams, clients, and contractors.
• Ensure compliance with relevant South African National Standards (SANS) and international geotechnical engineering practices applicable to Stellenbosch.
• Develop and implement risk management strategies for geotechnical hazards.
• Review and approve contractor methodologies for earthworks and foundation construction.

Requirements

• MSc or MEng in Geotechnical Engineering or a related field.
• Professional registration as a Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) with ECSA.
• Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in geotechnical engineering, with a strong portfolio in foundation design.
• Demonstrated expertise in geotechnical software (e.g., PLAXIS, GeoStudio).
• In-depth knowledge of South African soil conditions and construction practices.
• Excellent report writing and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly.
• Experience working on projects in the Western Cape is highly advantageous.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Valid driver's license is required for site visits around Stellenbosch.
