Placements24 is representing a leading engineering consultancy in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, seeking a skilled Geotechnical Engineer. The role focuses on coastal developments with a mix of office analysis and site visits, delivering robust geotechnical solutions for infrastructure projects.

The candidate should have 6+ years of geotechnical experience, strong soil/rock mechanics knowledge, and proficiency with PLAXIS/GEO5.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a geotechnical specialization.
• Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering is highly advantageous.
• Pr Eng registration with ECSA is preferred.
• Minimum of 6 years of geotechnical engineering experience including fieldwork and analysis.
• Strong knowledge of soil/rock mechanics and foundation engineering principles.
• Proficiency with PLAXIS or GEO5 and interpretation of lab results.

Responsibilities

• Plan and execute geotechnical investigations including site reconnaissance, boreholes, and tests.
• Analyze soil/rock data to determine properties and hazards.
• Design shallow and deep foundations, retaining walls, and slope stabilization.
• Perform settlement, bearing capacity, and seismic hazard assessments.
• Prepare reports, design recommendations, and construction specs.

About the Role

Our client, a leading engineering consultancy, is seeking a skilled Geotechnical Engineer to contribute to exciting projects in the Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal region. This role involves undertaking detailed geotechnical investigations, analyses, and designs for a variety of infrastructure and industrial projects, with a particular focus on coastal developments. You will be responsible for assessing soil conditions, advising on foundation designs, slope stability, and earthworks, ensuring the safety and stability of structures in challenging environments. The role requires a combination of office-based analysis and occasional site visits, offering a dynamic work experience. You will work closely with other engineering disciplines and clients to deliver robust and practical geotechnical solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and execute detailed geotechnical investigations, including site reconnaissance, borehole drilling, and in-situ testing.
• Analyze soil and rock mechanics data to determine engineering properties and identify potential hazards.
• Design shallow and deep foundations, retaining walls, and slope stabilization measures.
• Perform settlement analysis, bearing capacity calculations, and seismic hazard assessments.
• Prepare comprehensive geotechnical investigation reports, design recommendations, and construction specifications.
• Provide technical guidance and support to project teams and construction personnel.
• Liaise with clients, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders to communicate geotechnical findings and recommendations.
• Ensure compliance with relevant South African geotechnical standards and best practices.
• Conduct quality control checks on site investigations and laboratory testing.
• Assist in the development of proposals and the tendering process for new projects.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Geotechnical Engineering.
• A Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering is highly advantageous.
• Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) registration with ECSA is preferred.
• Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering, including fieldwork and analysis.
• Strong understanding of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and foundation engineering principles.
• Proficiency in geotechnical software such as PLAXIS, GEO5, or similar analysis tools.
• Experience with laboratory testing interpretation and correlation.
• Excellent report writing and communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and work effectively under pressure.
• Willingness to travel to project sites within Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal and surrounding areas as required.
• Valid driver's license.
