Job summary

Bidvest Facilities Management seeks an experienced Generator Service Technician to deliver high-quality maintenance, repair, and installation support for static and mobile generators at client sites. Emphasis on safety, troubleshooting, and field-based technical expertise across electrical and mechanical systems.

Conduct preventative maintenance, respond to emergencies, and document findings for client reporting.

Qualifications

  • N4/N5 or Diesel Mechanic qualification.
  • Matric (Senior Certificate) is required.
  • Valid SA Driver’s License is mandatory.
  • 3–5 years generator maintenance experience.
  • Knowledge of generator components and electrical systems.
  • Wireman’s license is an advantage.
  • Ability to read drawings and manuals.
  • Proven capability with diesel engines and electrical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Completing preventative maintenance and basic repairs on generators at client sites.
  • Attend to generator investigations for failed units.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance on power generation equipment in the field.
  • Repair and service electrical and related systems.
  • Maintain and repair both static and mobile generators.
  • Prepare service reports listing conditions and recommended actions.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and teams on-site.
  • Respond to emergencies and troubleshoot issues on site.

Job description

ROLE PURPOSE

Exceptional Generator Service Technician skill to deliver the most efficient, highest quality customer experiences in Critical Generators repair, installation, servicing and preventative maintenance, and any other aspects of both statics and mobile generators.

MAIN OUTPUTS
  • Completing preventative maintenance and/or basic repair activities on generators or components at the customer site with minimal direction.
  • Attend to Generator Investigations for failed units
  • Performing preventative maintenance activities as per documented schedules and standards on power generation products in the field.
  • Perform ongoing preventive and repair work on electrical and other installed systems, equipment, and other components.
  • Maintain, operate, and repair all supported generators (static, mobile) and associated equipment.
  • Perform assigned facility inspections and due diligence efforts, reporting on conditions impacting satisfactory client requirements.
  • Respond effectively to all emergencies related to machineries.
  • Prepare and submit to management service and summary reports listing conditions found in the performance of assigned work and recommend and/or suggest action to be taken.
  • Study and become familiar with the various items of equipment, and the methods required to use them properly, that are required in everyday activities.
  • Comply with all SHEQ procedures, maintaining good housekeeping and safety of work areas.
  • Recognize danger and safety hazards and propose methods to eliminate them.
  • Willing and able to support any afterhours work related activities as required.
  • Other assigned operational tasks as may be typically expected.
  • Communicate effectively with the client
  • Scheduled Maintenance duties.
  • Emergency assistance during standby duties including ability to troubleshoot to correct assessments of problems to action appropriately.
  • Quick escalation for beyond scope of work to management.
  • Conducting regular inspections to identify potential problems.
  • Collaborating with other teams to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
  • Requires strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail to ensure generator systems operate safely, efficiently, and effectively.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS / KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / EXPERIENCE

The Applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • N4/N5 or Diesel Mechanic
  • Wireman’s license will be an advantage. (IE)
  • Matric (Senior Certificate)
  • Valid SA Drivers’ License
  • 3-5 years of Generator maintenance experience with a clear understanding of all components relevant to Generator systems. (including controllers).
  • Excellent knowledge of Field Operations routine procedures and processes.
  • Knowledge of various power components and systems is an advantage (rectifiers, generators, batteries etc.)
  • Technician hand tools
  • Trouble-shooting skills with ability to think outside of the box.
  • Working electrical knowledge, including the use of tools and test equipment
  • Flexibility to work overtime.
  • Ability to use a computer for digital reporting and internal processes.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must pass pre-employment screening and criminal background checks.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain exceptional standards in terms of attendance and punctuality.
  • Well, presented with neat and professional appearance.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality, be detail oriented and disciplined, and adept at multi-tasking.
  • Proven experience in diesel engine mechanics and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of generator control systems and automatic transfer switches.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and manuals.
  • Strong analytical skills to diagnose complex mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems systematically and find effective solutions.
  • Capacity to lift heavy equipment and perform physical tasks in confined spaces.
  • Valid electrician or diesel mechanic trade certificate.
  • Relevant industry certifications related to generator maintenance and repair.
