Job summary

Merand Recruitment in Stellenbosch seeks a dependable Property Maintenance Assistant with 3–5 years in building and property upkeep. Responsibilities include painting, plastering, plumbing and electrical basics, and coordinating with foremen and contractors to keep properties in good condition.

The role requires strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Fluency in English and Afrikaans is advantageous; heritage sites experience is a plus. On-site work with occasional overtime.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 at a minimum.
• Formal certification in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, tiling, plastering, or painting is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Maintain properties through painting, plastering, tiling, basic electrical, carpentry, plumbing repairs.
• Inspect and maintain fire extinguishers and air conditioners.
• Coordinate with foreman and contractors in maintenance tasks.
• Engage with tenants professionally and respond to complaints.
• Attend health and safety meetings and maintain records.

Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Property Maintenance:

• Painting, plastering, skimming of walls and tiling
• Basic electrical repairs
• Basic carpentry work
• Basic plumbing repairs & maintenance
• Inspection and maintenance of fire extinguishers and air conditioners
• Site inspections and assessment of damage at properties with foreman
• Garden maintenance when needed
• Follow any additional instructions and requests from Foreman or Employer

Contractors and Tenant Relationship Management:

• Engage with outside contractors for maintenance not done by the in-house team in a respectful and professional manner
• Efficiently respond to tenants complaints, evaluate what action needs to be taken and discuss with foreman
• Always treat tenants and their property in a respectful and professional manner

Health and Safety:

• Adhere to safety policies and procedures
• Attend monthly health and safety meetings at HHSA workshop
• Attend training as scheduled from time to time by Health and Safety manager
• Upkeep of monthly registers and records re-tools, ladders, first aid, stock take

General:

• Participate actively in daily, weekly and monthly team meetings to ensure team works effectively
• Continuously assess properties to pro-actively identify potential maintenance actions
• Provide input to and execute maintenance plan
• Keep foreman or employer informed of completed tasks and challenges encountered
• Be available to work overtime if required from time to time
• Be available to attend to maintenance at properties not located in Stellenbosch, which may include a period of up to two weeks
