Job summary

Camps Bay Retreat is seeking a Gardens and Grounds Supervisor to oversee daily maintenance of our hotel gardens, nurseries and outdoor spaces, reporting to the Gardens and Grounds Manager. You’ll supervise staff, assist with irrigation operations and contribute to landscaping projects to uphold our high presentation standards.

Key duties include planning and administration, ensuring equipment is maintained and outdoor areas remain immaculate.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent required.
• Qualification in horticulture, landscaping or garden maintenance.
• A recognised landscape architectural professional certification would be advantageous.
• At least 1 year’s experience in medium to large gardens.
• Knowledge of garden maintenance, landscaping practices, irrigation systems and plant care.
• Strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily maintenance and presentation of hotel gardens, grounds, nurseries and landscaped areas.
• Ensure irrigation systems operate efficiently and address maintenance needs.
• Supervise pruning, trimming, weeding, planting and upkeep of trees, shrubs and indoor plants.
• Maintain vegetable and herb gardens, assisting with seasonal planting, growing and harvesting.
• Keep pathways and outdoor areas clean, visually appealing.
• Assist with landscaping designs, project plans, drawings, specifications and client requirements.
• Support garden maintenance programmes, project planning and landscaping improvements.
• Maintain garden equipment, tools, stock and stores, ensuring secure storage.
• Provide relief management when required and take ownership of projects and maintenance programmes; train and supervise staff.
• Maintain facilities, aesthetics and grounds records; follow up on outstanding matters.

Education

Grade 12 or equivalent

The Role

As Gardens and Grounds Supervisor, you’ll work alongside the Gardens and Grounds Manager to ensure that hotel gardens, landscaped areas, nurseries and grounds are immaculately maintained. You’ll oversee daily garden maintenance, support landscaping projects and irrigation operations, and assist with planning, administration and staff supervision. You’ll also act as second-in-charge in the absence of the Gardens and Grounds Manager, helping maintain the group’s high standards of presentation and upkeep.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee the daily maintenance and presentation of hotel gardens, grounds, nurseries and landscaped areas
• Ensure irrigation systems operate efficiently and identify and address garden maintenance requirements
• Supervise pruning, trimming, weeding, planting and the upkeep of trees, shrubs, hedges and indoor plants
• Maintain vegetable and herb gardens, assisting with seasonal planting, growing and harvesting
• Ensure pathways and outdoor areas remain clean, clear of debris and aesthetically pleasing
• Assist with landscaping designs, project plans, drawings, specifications and client requirements
• Support garden maintenance programmes, project planning and the implementation of landscaping improvements
• Maintain garden equipment, tools, stock and stores, ensuring secure storage and compliance with storekeeping procedures
• Provide relief management when required and take ownership of assigned projects and maintenance programmesTrain, coach and supervise garden staff, ensuring professional standards, correct uniform and fair disciplinary practices
• Maintain accurate facilities, aesthetics and grounds records, ensuring administrative tasks and outstanding matters are followed up

What We’re Looking For

• Grade 12 or equivalent
• A qualification in horticulture, landscaping or garden maintenance
• A recognised landscape architectural professional certification would be advantageous
• At least 1 years’ experience working in medium to large gardens
• Knowledge of garden maintenance, landscaping practices, irrigation systems and plant care
• Strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills
• The ability to supervise a team, build positive working relationships and maintain high standards
• A proactive, resourceful and detail-oriented approach, with a willingness to learn and develop
• The ability to work overtime and provide relief management when required
