Job summary

Valterra Platinum Limited is seeking a Foreman Electrical to supervise artisans in maintaining and installing electrical equipment within the Operational Unit. You will manage resources and ensure operations run safely and efficiently under the Minerals Act.

The role requires a qualified Electrician with supervisory training, strong leadership, and a focus on safety. Band C5 level with daily coordination and after-hours standby may be included.

Qualifications

  • Qualified Electrician with a trade certificate.
  • Foreman certificate or supervisory training.
  • Experience supervising artisans in mining or heavy industry preferred.
  • Hands-on knowledge of electrical safety standards and containment.

Job Description

The Foreman Electrical is a 2.9.2 appointment in terms of the Minerals Act and is responsible for the supervision of artisans in the maintenance and installation of electrical equipment and services. It includes the administration and management of assigned resources within the designated area towards effective operation of the Operational Unit.

Job responsibilities include (but not limited to):

Electrical installations and equipment operate at specification
Maintenance of equipment

  • Ensures use of proper procedure and required safety devices for all hazardous tasks
  • Implements and maintains applicable Safety, Regulations, The Act, Codes of practice and standards
  • Completes safety, injury, hazard, risk and incident reports
  • Continuously discusses safety statistics and campaign details with team

Ensure inspections and use of hazardous machinery and equipment comply to legal and mine requirements

  • Ensure that all appropriate work specifications, procedures and legal requirements are applied to the use of equipment, machinery and related safety devices
  • Perform periodic and scheduled inspections of task and equipment as stipulated

Supervises the installation and maintenance of all electrical units and components thereof

  • Liaises with the engineering team and other role players regarding daily, weekly and monthly needs in the area
  • Plans daily, weekly and monthly work requirement and priorities with operational team
  • Ensures availability of required parts, equipment and resources
  • Monitors the performance of team

Monitors operational effectiveness of electrical cabling and power distribution facilities

  • Performs periodic and scheduled inspections of cabling and equipment
  • Schedules breakdown requests and installation needs with relevant role players
  • Supervises the installation, replacement or servicing of units and/or components as specified
  • Supervises the housekeeping standards in area of responsibility

Process remains fully operational

  • Plan and coordinate daily, weekly and monthly work requirements and priorities with operational team
  • Allocate labour resources and equipment to scheduled and priority activities so as to maintain and ensure high levels of labour, equipment and operational performance standards
  • Ensure the reduction of costs
  • Chairing safety meetings at the start of each day
  • Attending General Safety meeting and giving feedback to team
  • Stop and repair area/plant as soon as possible after problem identification
  • Investigation of incidents/accidents in area of responsibility (find root causes and sort out timeously)
  • Ensure procedures are followed – doing planned task observations from time to time
  • Liaise with the other Foreman to ensure that any problems that could overlap with other sections are pro-actively identified and discussed
  • Oversee the development of a healthy spirit of cooperation within the section
  • Identify operational priorities within the section that would ensure the optimization of the section’s performance
  • Monitor the process to identify any possible problems or risk areas to the section and schedule remedy actions
  • Ensure availability for after-hours standby duties
  • Allocate multi-task team members to Artisans when required to perform and ensure effective maintenance
  • Accompany the Engineers on regular inspections and audits around the section
  • Review operational plans and re-assign targets and objectives to subordinates
  • Provided regular support to both the mining and services employees within the section as well as to other sections on electrical matters
  • Take charge during crises and major overhauls/maintenance
  • Capturing data to be used for analysis to ensure better maintenance
  • Find the cause of breakdowns and correct
  • Update drawings on instrument loops and when changes occur
  • Conduct regular inspections on all works (over inspections on planned jobs and repairs to set standards/legal requirements) to ensure safety

This role is at a Band C5 level reporting to the Section Engineer

Qualifications
  • Relevant Trade certificate - Qualified as an Electrician
  • Forman Certificate

Experience

  • Supervisory experience would be advantageous

  • Valid driving license code 08
  • Basic computer literacy (Word/Excel/Outlook, Sap)
