Job summary

Placements24 is seeking an Agricultural Extension Officer for a non-profit program in Paarl, Western Cape. The role focuses on transferring knowledge to smallholder farmers, promoting sustainable farming, crop improvement, and productivity through field-based training and technical advice.

You will work with farmers, organize field days, diagnose crop issues, support cooperatives, collect practice data, and liaise with research bodies and government agencies to bring resources to communities.

Qualifications

• Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field.
• Minimum of 3 years experience in agricultural extension services, community development, or related role.
• Strong knowledge of crop production, soil management, and pest/disease control relevant to the Western Cape region.
• Proven experience organizing and delivering training programs to farmers or rural communities.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and facilitation skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical guidance and training to farmers on modern agronomic practices, crop management, and yield enhancement.
• Educate farmers on the adoption of improved seed varieties, soil conservation methods, and water management techniques.
• Organize and conduct farmer field days, workshops, and demonstration plots to showcase new technologies and practices.
• Assist farmers in diagnosing and managing crop pests, diseases, and nutritional disorders.
• Facilitate farmer group formation and support cooperatives to improve market access and collective bargaining power.
• Collect data on farming practices, crop performance, and socio-economic conditions of farmer beneficiaries.
• Liaise with agricultural research institutions, government agencies, and other stakeholders to bring relevant resources and information to farmers.
• Promote sustainable and climate-smart agricultural practices among the farming community.
• Prepare regular reports on extension activities, achievements, and challenges encountered.
