Placements24 is seeking a Facade Engineer for our client in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. The role focuses on designing and detailing facade systems, ensuring compliance with SA codes, and collaborating with architects and contractors to deliver high-quality facade solutions.

You will balance office design work with site visits, gaining exposure to significant regional projects and advancing expertise in materials and technologies that shape the architectural landscape of the Eastern Cape.

Qualifications

• Bachelor-level or higher in engineering or architecture with strong facade focus.
• Minimum 5 years in facade engineering or facade design consultancy.
• Solid knowledge of facade materials (glass, metal, stone) and performance.
• Proficiency in CAD software and facade analysis tools.

Responsibilities

• Design, specify, and detail facade systems (curtain walls, cladding, windows, roofing).
• Analyze thermal, acoustic, structural and weather performance of facades.
• Ensure compliance with building codes and project specs.
• Collaborate with architects, structural engineers and builders.
• Prepare detailed drawings, specs and documentation.
• Coordinate with manufacturers and subcontractors for fabrication/installation.
• Conduct site inspections to verify installation quality.

About the Role

Our client, a leading specialist in architectural solutions within the construction industry, is seeking a talented Facade Engineer to join their team in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape. This role is critical in ensuring the design, performance, and integrity of building facades. The successful candidate will work closely with design teams, contractors, and manufacturers to deliver innovative and compliant facade systems. This position offers a unique blend of technical expertise and project involvement, contributing to the aesthetic and functional success of significant building projects in the region. The role involves both office-based design work and site visits, offering a dynamic work experience in Port Elizabeth.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, specify, and detail facade systems, including curtain walls, cladding, windows, and roofing.
• Conduct performance analysis of facade systems (e.g., thermal, acoustic, structural, weather resistance).
• Ensure facade designs comply with relevant building codes, standards, and project specifications.
• Collaborate with architects, structural engineers, and other consultants during the design development phase.
• Prepare detailed technical drawings, specifications, and supporting documentation.
• Liaise with facade manufacturers and sub-contractors to ensure quality and timely fabrication and installation.
• Conduct site inspections to verify installation quality and adherence to design intent.
• Review shop drawings, material samples, and mock-ups.
• Troubleshoot and resolve facade-related issues that arise during construction.
• Stay updated on new facade technologies, materials, and best practices.

Requirements

• A degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, or Materials Science) or Architecture with a strong technical focus.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience specifically in facade engineering or facade design consultancy.
• In-depth knowledge of facade systems, materials (glass, metal, stone), and their performance characteristics.
• Understanding of relevant South African building regulations and standards pertaining to facades.
• Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit) and facade analysis tools.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with various stakeholders.
• Ability to interpret and develop complex technical drawings and specifications.
• Experience with site supervision and quality control for facade installations is advantageous.
• Familiarity with thermal, structural, and weather performance testing standards.
