Job summary

Valterra Platinum is expanding its environmental leadership. We seek an Environmental Specialist to drive safety leadership, EMS implementation, and incident management at our sites in South Africa.

You will oversee inspections, risk assessments, and improvement plans with the site teams. Requirements include a Diploma/Degree in Environmental Science or related field, 3+ years mining experience, and knowledge of ISO14001, environmental law, and auditing.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Environmental Science or related field.
  • Short courses in Environmental law, ISO14001 and Auditing (Advantageous).
  • At least 3 years mining-related field experience.
  • Knowledge of operational processes, risk management and budgeting basics.

Responsibilities

  • Lead safety leadership and ensure site environmental compliance.
  • Assist EMS implementation and maintain environmental models.
  • Identify, classify and report environmental incidents and hazards.
  • Support investigations and implement corrective actions to prevent repeats.
  • Engage with project teams to manage environmental issues and risks.

Job Description

Safety Leadership

  • Conduct effectives safety shares at the start of all meetings
  • Regularly participate in planned Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) engagements
  • Know and follow Valterra Platinum's Life Saving Golden rules
  • Complete a documented Pre-Task Risk Assessment (SLAM or Take 5) before starting any field work or physical task
  • Conducting environmental inspections and taking action to address outcomes - including development of short-term improvement plans
  • Completing environmental incident reporting and investigations
  • Assisting with environmental impact assessments
  • Assisting with sampling and interpretation of environmental monitoring data
  • Assisting with environmental awareness training
  • Day to day work management oversight of the sites Environmental Assistants and/or Environmental Interns
  • Conduct inspections and internal audits for license and permit compliance.
  • Support the implementation of improvement plans to address identified compliance gaps.
  • Accurate, timeous capturing of environmental compliance data on relevant systems (including inspections and audit programs for site)
  • Assist to maintain a list of material environmental risks
  • Assist to implement and field verify critical controls for each material environmental risk
Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
  • Assist implementation of the sites Environmental Management Systems
  • Assist to maintain and utilize relevant environmental models in order to predict future environmental impacts and/or proactively manage key site environmental risks (with providing data and supporting information)
Environmental Incident Management
  • Assist to identify, classify and report Environmental Incidents and Environmental Hazards across the site
  • Take part investigations of environmental incidents as per procedure/plan.
  • Support the implementation of actions and improvement plans to address findings from incident investigations and to prevent repeat incidents
Qualifications
  • Diploma or Degree in Environmental Science or related field
  • Completed relevant Short courses, such as Environmental law, ISO14001 and Auditing (Advantageous)
  • At least 3 years working experience in Mining related field
  • Operations: Knowledge of operational processes within scope of role
  • Commercial: Basic financial metrics, cost, and value management & budgeting tools
  • Management: Risk management techniques and critical controls.
  • Incident investigations
  • Project and people engagement to manage issues on environmental matters. Example waste management on site with permanent personnel and contractors.
  • Compliance: Safety, health and environment, legislative, statutory, regulatory and permitting requirements
