Job summary

Cementation Africa invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Environmental Officer to be placed in Tharisa Mine. The successful candidate will report to the Safety Manager Projects. The company will provide remuneration and benefits relevant and appropriate to the position.

Preference will be given to Historically Disadvantaged South African (HDSA) candidates. Applications only open to South African Citizens / Permanent Residents.

Qualifications

• Diploma / Degree in Environmental Management at NQF level 6
• Environmental Aspects and Impacts training
• Root cause analysis techniques training (preferred)
• Auditing on ISO 14000 principles (preferred)
• MS Office proficient [Word and Excel]
• Exposure to SharePoint, or similar software
• Ability to recognise environmental risks, deviations and nonconformance
• Planning and organising skills
• Ethical and professional
• Problem solving skills to contribute practical environmental solutions within set parameters
• Attention to detail and auditing skills
• Good English written and verbal communication skills
• Must be physically fit for underground visits

Responsibilities

• Conduct routine environmental inspections and assessments and record findings
• Identify environmental risks, deviations, non-conformances and recommend actions
• Monitor compliance with environmental legislation, licences, permits, management plans and standards
• Implement and monitor environmental initiatives and improvement programmes
• Maintain environmental data on risk management reporting systems
• Maintain incident, non-conformance and corrective action registers and track actions
• Conduct or participate in environmental incident investigations and root cause analyses
• Conduct environmental audits and participate in internal, client and external regulatory audits
• Engage with employees, contractors, regulators and other stakeholders on environmental matters
• Demonstrate self-management in line with company values

The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not be limited to:

• Conduct routine and targeted environmental inspections and assessments and ensure findings are accurately recorded
• Identify environmental risks, legal deviations and non-conformances and recommend appropriate corrective and preventative actions
• Monitor compliance with applicable environmental legislation, licences, permits, environmental management plans, and company standards
• Implement and monitor environmental initiatives and improvement programmes within the area of responsibility
• Maintain accurate environmental data on the applicable risk management reporting systems
• Maintain environmental incident, non-conformance and corrective action registers and ensure actions are tracked and closed within agreed timeframes
• Conduct or participate in environmental incident investigations and root cause analysis, including TapRooT or other approved methodologies where required
• Conduct environmental audits and participate in internal, client and external regulatory audits
• Conduct and/or facilitate environmental aspects and impacts assessments and ensure significant environmental risks are appropriately managed
• Identify trends and recurring environmental issues and provide recommendations to operational management
• Support the preparation and submission of statutory and regulatory environmental reports, where delegated
• Engage effectively with employees, contractors, clients, regulators, and other stakeholders on environmental matters
• Demonstrate effective self-management and accountability in alignment with company values and leadership initiatives

Suitable candidates must possess the following minimum qualifications and skills:

• Diploma / Degree in Environmental Management at NQF level 6

Suitable candidates must have the following work experience:

• Minimum 6 years of relevant environmental experience, with at least 2 years of experience in a mining environment
• Proven experience in implementing environmental management plans and monitoring compliance with applicable environmental legislation
• Experience with environmental incident investigations and root cause analysis
• Experience developing, implementing, and tracking corrective and preventative actions
• Working knowledge of mine environmental management systems and reporting requirements
• Knowledge and practical application of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and relevant subsidiary legislation
• Working knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) insofar as it relates to environmental risk and mining operations
• Experience engaging with operational management, contractors, employees, and relevant external stakeholders
