Job summary

The Enrolled Nurse will be responsible for direct and/or indirect nursing care of a patient or group of patients and will function under the direct and/ or indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse. The Enrolled Nurse will be responsible for assessment and care as well as the needs of patients and will be responsible for assisting the scrub nurse during operations and keeping the operating room sterile.

Experience in anaesthetics for this role would be an advantage.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent NQF level 4 qualification.
• Enrolled Nurse qualification with SANC registration.
• Post-Op nursing experience and anaesthetic exposure are advantageous.
• Strong knowledge of surgical procedures and patient safety.
• Diligent infection control and documentation practices.

Responsibilities

• Direct/indirect nursing care under RN supervision.
• Prepare theatre, stock replenishment and instrument handling.
• Assist scrub nurse and maintain aseptic technique.
• Support anaesthetist during induction and patient positioning.
• Maintain patient care plans and communicate changes in health status.
• Ensure safe environment, proper documentation and record keeping.

Job description

The Enrolled Nurse will be responsible for direct and/or indirect nursing care of a patient or group of patients and will function under the direct and/ or indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse.

The Enrolled Nurse will be responsible for assessment and care as well as the needs of patients and will be responsible for assisting the scrub nurse during operations and keeping the operating room sterile.

Experience in anaesthetics for this role would be an advantage.

Further Role Breakdown :

• Practice patient care according to his/her Scope of Practice and assume total responsibility for these activities.
• Be active in preparing the theatre, and replenishment of stock, consignment and instrument replenishment of the operating room allocated to for a procedure list.
• Contributes to the holistic care of patients.
• Maintain the principals of aseptic technique when opening packs and consumables.
• To help control patient and hospital costs through the correct, safe and economical use of supplies and equipment.
• Handle equipment, instruments, stock and medication safely and competently.
• Effective risk prevention and management when assisting with the positioning of the patient or transfer of the patient to and from the operating table
• Effective communication with patients regarding their care.
• To assist the anaesthetist during induction of anaesthesia
• Executes all procedures according to hospital standards.
• Ensure that all patients have an appropriate nursing care plan.
• Communicate with Health Care Practitioners regarding any change in health status.
• Compliance with documentation policy.
• Record and sign specimen registers
• Ongoing audit of health records to ensure compliance
• Ensures all stock is well controlled and managed, charged and credited appropriately.
• Maintains a therapeutic, clean and safe environment that is free from medico-legal hazards.
• Maintains a safe working environment in accordance with the Machinery and Occupational Safety Act.
• To take responsibility for own nursing actions and professional conduct.

• Previous experience assisting in anaesthetics would be advantageous.

• Grade 12 or equivalent NQF level 4 qualification.
• Enrolled Nurse qualification.
• Current registration with South African Nursing Council (SANC).
• Minimum of 5 years as an enrolled nurse assistant.
• Post-Op nursing experience is essential
• Floor nurse and Anaesthetic experience essential.
• Strong knowledge of surgical procedures and patient safety.
• Knowledge of Infection Control & Prevention.
• To demonstrate an understanding of the surgical procedure by anticipating the needs of the multi-disciplinary team members
