Job summary

SMEC, part of the Surbana Jurong group, is seeking two Assistant Resident Engineers for the Mtentu River Bridge project in Port Edward, Eastern Cape. You will provide extensive structural bridge expertise, support the Resident Engineer in contract administration, and supervise construction activities on site.

The role requires a BSc Engineering or related degree, 2–12 years of design or supervision experience, and fluent English.

• 2–12 years structural design and/or supervision experience.
• Registered Professional Engineer (or soon to be registered) advantageous.
• Must be articulate in English.

Responsibilities

• Acting as Assistant Resident Engineer on site.
• Managing technical aspects of bridge erection and geometric control of piers and decks.
• Liaison with designers for site queries and with Contractor on technical matters.
• Evaluate and approve method statements.
• Monitor quality, production processes, and site safety practices.
• Oversee project budget implications from a technical perspective.
• Prepare variation orders and assist with close-out documentation.

Job description

Location: Port Edward Eastern Cape – Mtentu River Bridge site REPORTS TO: Resident Engineer and Chief Resident Engineer

PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE

We are currently seeking 2 Assistant Resident Engineers to participate in the construction supervision of one of the largest bridges in South African history. (One senior ARE and 1 junior ARE)The roles will involve providing extensive structural bridge expertise and technical support to the Resident Engineer in contract administration for our project at the Msikaba River Bridge site.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Acting as Assistant Resident Engineer.
• Managing technical aspects on site, bridge erection engineering aspects, geometric control in the erection of piers and decks, etc.
• Liaison with designers regarding site engineering queries when necessary.
• Evaluation and approval of method statements.
• Liaison with the Contractor regarding technical aspects.
• Managing some resources for site supervision of technical aspects.
• Application of the Firm’s Quality Management System.
• Monitoring of quality of works, including supervision of production processes and any off-site and/or remote construction and/or assembly facilities.
• Monitoring of programme and contract budgets from a technical perspective.
• Quantities and payment certificates.
• Preparation of variation orders.
• Closing out project including compiling completion/close-out reports.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

• Compiling high quality responses to technical queries from the Contractor.
• Timeous responses to all technical queries from the Contractor.
• Proactive management of technical difficulties experienced on site.
• Timeous identification and clarification of technical aspects and discrepancies in the contract.
• Optimisation of safety management by the supervision team.
• Effective implementation and management of the Quality Acceptance Control system on site Handover on completion.
• Optimum resource utilization.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

• BSc Engineering / B. Engineering Degree
• 2 to 12 years structural design and/or supervision experience.
• Registered Professional Engineer (or soon to be registered) with the Engineering Council of South Africa or equivalent internationally recognized registration and/or legally required qualification will be advantageous.
• Must be articulate in English.
