Job summary

Placements24 in Stellenbosch, Western Cape is seeking an Electrical Hardware Design Engineer to lead the design, development, and testing of advanced hardware from concept to schematic capture, PCB layout, prototyping, and verification.

You will collaborate with firmware and software teams to ensure seamless hardware–software integration, perform signal integrity and power integrity analyses, select components, and document designs, BOMs, and test results.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• 5+ years of experience in electrical hardware design for product development.
• Proficiency in schematic capture and PCB layout with industry tools.

Responsibilities

• Design analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits for new products.
• Create schematics and PCB layouts using Altium, OrCAD or similar tools.
• Select components balancing performance, cost, and availability.
• Develop test plans for hardware validation and characterization.
• Build and debug prototypes; troubleshoot hardware issues.

About the Role

Our client, a dynamic technology firm specializing in cutting-edge electronic products, is seeking a highly skilled Electrical Hardware Design Engineer to join their dedicated team in the vibrant innovation hub of Stellenbosch, Western Cape. This is a pivotal role where you will be instrumental in designing, developing, and testing complex electronic hardware solutions. You will engage in the full product development lifecycle, from conceptualization and schematic capture to PCB layout, prototyping, and verification. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of analog and digital circuit design, power management, and embedded systems. This role requires your full-time presence at our Stellenbosch, Western Cape facility to foster close collaboration with product teams and ensure the seamless integration of hardware into our innovative product offerings.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop analog, digital, and mixed-signal electronic circuits for new product development.
• Create detailed schematics and PCB layouts using industry-standard EDA tools (e.g., Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro).
• Select appropriate electronic components, considering performance, cost, and availability.
• Develop and execute comprehensive test plans for hardware validation and characterization.
• Build and debug prototypes, troubleshooting hardware issues at the component and system level.
• Collaborate with firmware and software engineers to ensure seamless hardware-software integration.
• Perform signal integrity and power integrity analysis to ensure design robustness.
• Contribute to defining product specifications and requirements based on hardware capabilities.
• Maintain thorough documentation of designs, including BOMs, schematics, test reports, and design notes.
• Stay current with emerging hardware design technologies and trends.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical hardware design, with a focus on product development.
• Proficiency in schematic capture and PCB layout using tools like Altium Designer, OrCAD, or similar.
• Strong understanding of analog circuit design principles, including amplification, filtering, and signal conditioning.
• Experience with digital logic design, microcontrollers, FPGAs, and embedded systems.
• Knowledge of power supply design, regulation, and battery management systems.
• Familiarity with testing equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience in the Stellenbosch, Western Cape tech ecosystem is a plus.
