Job summary

Assegai is seeking an Electrical Engineer with 4+ years of post-qualification experience to design, implement and support power generation control systems across South Africa and Africa. You will lead tendering, schematics design, and on-site installation supervision.

You will coordinate with clients and project teams, travel regularly for site work, and provide specialist protection system expertise while developing robust, safe, and compliant solutions.

Qualifications

• BSc Electrical Engineering or BTech Electrical Engineering Heavy Current is required.
• Minimum of 4 years' post-qualification experience in power generation control, electrical protection or a closely related environment.
• Experience with generator or MV protection relays. Knowledge of governing and excitation systems.
• Experience with MV switchgear, including retrofit installations.
• Ability to read, interpret and design electrical engineering schematics.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and MS Office.
• Strong technical, analytical and problem-solving ability.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Sound judgement and decision-making ability.
• Ability to work independently while also coordinating effectively with project teams.
• Willingness and ability to travel regularly to sites in South Africa and Africa.

Responsibilities

• Prepare technical tenders and proposals.
• Design and draft electrical systems and engineering schematics.
• Manage electrical and power generation projects from planning through to completion.
• Oversee and participate in electrical installations.
• Carry out testing and commissioning of systems and equipment.
• Provide specialist technical support relating to generator control and protection systems.
• Work with governing and excitation systems.
• Work with generator and MV protection relays.
• Support MV switchgear retrofit installations.
• Liaise with clients, contractors and other project stakeholders.
• Coordinate resources and project teams as required.
• Travel to project and client sites in South Africa and elsewhere in Africa.
