Placements24 is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer for an on-site role in Upington, Northern Cape. You will design electrical distribution networks, MCCs, and control systems for mining and mineral processing plants, ensuring safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.

You will develop schematics, perform load and protection studies, and support project execution through commissioning and troubleshooting.

Qualifications

Our client, a significant player in the mining and minerals processing industry, is seeking a competent Electrical Design Engineer to join their operations in Upington, Northern Cape . This role is critical for the electrical design and engineering support of their processing plants and associated infrastructure. You will be involved in designing electrical distribution systems, motor control centers (MCCs), power systems, and automation controls for heavy industrial equipment. Key Responsibilities

Design and engineer electrical systems for mining and mineral processing plants, including power distribution, lighting, and earthing. Develop electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and control system architectures. Specify electrical equipment such as MV/LV switchgear, transformers, MCCs, motors, and variable speed drives. Perform electrical load calculations, fault studies, and protection coordination. Ensure designs comply with relevant mining regulations, safety standards (e.g., OHS Act), and industry best practices. Provide electrical engineering support during project execution, installation, and commissioning. Troubleshoot electrical issues and propose effective solutions for plant operations. Collaborate with mechanical engineers, process engineers, and external consultants. Review vendor documentation and drawings to ensure compliance with project requirements. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for electrical systems and plant efficiency in Upington .

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. Minimum of 7 years of experience in electrical design engineering, preferably within the mining, heavy industrial, or process engineering sectors. Proven experience in designing MV/LV distribution systems, MCCs, and motor control. Familiarity with PLC and SCADA systems for process automation. Proficiency in electrical design software such as AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP, or similar. Strong understanding of power system protection and fault analysis. Knowledge of South African mining electrical regulations and standards is highly desirable. Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in the Northern Cape . Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng) registration with ECSA is a significant advantage.
