Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Professional Golf Course Superintendent in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, to lead the maintenance and development of a championship golf course on-site. The role demands deep turfgrass knowledge, hands-on leadership, and a commitment to high playing standards year-round.

The ideal candidate will manage turfgrass programs, irrigation, pest/disease control, and budgeting while guiding a team of groundskeepers.

Qualifications

• Degree or diploma in Agronomy, Horticulture, Turfgrass Management, or a closely related field.
• Minimum 5 years as Assistant Superintendent or 3 years as Superintendent on a high-quality golf course.
• Proven turfgrass physiology, soil science, pest/disease management, and irrigation expertise.
• Experience in budget management and staff supervision.
• Strong understanding of golf course design and construction principles.
• GCSA certification or equivalent is highly desirable.
• Excellent leadership, communication and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency in course management reporting software.
• Ability to work long hours including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
• Must reside in or relocate to Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

Responsibilities

• Manage all aspects of golf course maintenance, including turfgrass cultivation, irrigation, pest and disease control, and fertilization programs.
• Develop and implement an annual operating budget with efficient resource allocation.
• Supervise, train, and mentor groundskeepers and maintenance staff to foster excellence and safety.
• Operate and maintain a fleet of golf course maintenance equipment.
• Maintain championship standards focusing on playing conditions, aesthetics and sustainability.
• Oversee drainage, tree management and landscape maintenance programs.
• Enforce safety protocols for staff and course users.
• Coordinate with Golf Professional, Club Management and members on course-related matters.
• Stay updated with turfgrass science, technology and best practices.
• Manage water resources responsibly with efficient irrigation strategies.
