SIGNAL HILL PRODUCTS in Cape Town is seeking an Artisan to maintain Brewing and Utilities equipment, ensuring reliability, safety and efficient operation. You will perform preventative maintenance, fault-finding, and breakdown response to support production.

Qualifications

• Artisan Trade qualification and 2+ years post-trade experience required.
• Experience with automation and control systems is essential.
• Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills across mechanical, electrical and instrumentation domains.

Responsibilities

• Carry out planned, preventive and corrective maintenance on Brewing and Utilities equipment.
• Respond to equipment breakdowns and restore safely and efficiently to minimise production losses.
• Fault-find and diagnose mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, pneumatic and control-related failures.
• Support operation and maintenance of critical utilities (air, water treatment, CO2 systems, steam and boilers).
• Maintain and troubleshoot brewing equipment, pumps, valves, conveyors and process lines.
• Record maintenance history and contribute to reliability improvement initiatives.

Overall Responsibility

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, availability and safe operation of Brewing and Utilities equipment, supporting production through effective preventative maintenance, fault-finding, breakdown response, and continuous improvement.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, availability and safe operation of Brewing and Utilities equipment, supporting production through effective preventative maintenance, fault-finding, breakdown response, and continuous improvement. This technical role suited to an artisan who enjoys problem solving, working with process equipment and utilities, and driving equipment reliability.

Focus Area 1: Maintain safe, healthy and risk-free working environment

• Adhere to SHP Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) standards in all daily activities.
• Participate in safety observations, follow established safety processes, and report or escalation identified gaps.
• Implement and sustain 5S standards in the designated work area, maintaining workplace organization and discipline.
• Always adhere to safe working practices
• Follow all standard operating procedures (SOPs), risk assessments, and safe work instructions.
• Conduct pre-task safety checks before starting equipment or processes

Focus Area 2: Manufacturing Excellence culture

• Consistently follows Manufacturing Excellence (ME) pillar tools and standardized work processes.
• Always maintain engineering area
• Perform assigned Autonomous Maintenance tasks in accordance with established standards.
• Take responsibility for basic equipment condition, inspection, cleaning, and lubrication activities.
• Report equipment abnormalities and support restoration to basic conditions.
• Support the continuous improvement culture
• Take part in problem solving using the Focused improvement tools.
• Support and action 5S roll out in department

Focus Area 3: Maintain & repair plant and associated devices

• Carry out planned, preventative and corrective maintenance on Brewing and Utilities equipment.
• Respond to equipment breakdowns and restore equipment safely and efficiently to minimise production losses.
• Fault-find and diagnose mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, pneumatic and control-related failures.
• Support the operation and maintenance of critical utilities, including: Compressed air and dryers, Water treatment and W8, CO2 systems, Electrical power and standby generation, Ammonia (NH3) and glycol refrigeration, Steam and boilers – coal and LFO, and Effluent / wastewater treatment.
• Maintain and troubleshoot Brewing equipment, pumps, valves, conveyors, filtration, and associated process equipment.
• Work with VSD, control valves, transmitters, flowmeters, level instruments, and other process instrumentation
• Conduct equipment inspections and identify weak points, poor supports, leaks, recurring failures, and potential reliability risks.
• Participate in Root Cause Analysis, Why-Why, PDCA and problem-solving activities.
• Ensure corrective actions are implemented and that problem solving is closed through effective loop closure.
• Support the development and maintenance of critical spares and maintenance packages.
• Ensure equipment is maintained according to OEM requirements, maintenance standards, and site procedures.
• Participate in shutdown planning and execution, including inspections, repairs, replacements, and commissioning.
• Maintain accurate maintenance history and capture work completed on the relevant maintenance management system.
• Support team members with breakdown analysis, maintenance planning, and reliability improvement initiatives.
• Work closely with Operators to identify abnormalities early and improve operator care and equipment ownership.
• Comply with all safety, food safety, environmental and quality requirements.

Minimum Requirements

• Relevant recognised Artisan Trade qualification.
• Minimum 2 years' relevant post-trade experience.
• Experience in an industrial/manufacturing environment.
• N3 technical qualification
• Experience furnace or similar environment will be an advantage;
• Ability to interpret data, or analysis for reliability RCFA;
• Experience in Instrumentation, Simatic PCS7 systems, WinCC SCADA and Industrial Network (Ethernet, Profibus & Profinet);
• Computer Literacy (Ms Office for report writing);
• Proficiency in English;
• Medically fit in terms of OHSAct; and
• Knowledge of HSEC systems.
