Placements24 is seeking a highly analytical Data Scientist to support mining operations across South Africa from a fully remote setup. You will work with geological, operational, and financial data to build predictive models, identify trends, and deliver data-driven solutions that improve efficiency and decision-making.

Qualifications

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly analytical and innovative Data Scientist to join their pioneering team, operating remotely to support mining operations across South Africa. This role will focus on leveraging large datasets to derive actionable insights, optimize operational efficiency, and drive strategic decision-making. You will work with diverse data sources, including geological, operational, and financial data, to build predictive models, identify trends, and develop data-driven solutions. Key Responsibilities

• Collect, clean, and preprocess large and complex datasets from various mining operations and systems.
• Develop, test, and deploy machine learning models for applications such as predictive maintenance, production forecasting, and ore grade prediction.
• Perform statistical analysis and exploratory data analysis to uncover trends, patterns, and anomalies within mining data.
• Create compelling data visualizations and dashboards to communicate insights and findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Collaborate with domain experts (geologists, engineers, operations managers) to understand business problems and translate them into data science solutions.
• Stay current with the latest advancements in data science , machine learning, and big data technologies.
• Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with relevant regulations.

Requirements

• Master's degree or PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field.
• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience as a Data Scientist or in a similar quantitative role.
• Strong programming skills in Python or R, including experience with relevant libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Pandas).
• Proficiency in SQL and experience working with large databases and big data technologies (e.g., Spark, Hadoop).
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and MLOps practices is highly desirable.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex models simply.
