Job summary

WesBank in Johannesburg seeks a Data Scientist II to plan, build, optimise and implement quantitative methodologies and advanced models supporting business strategy across the FirstRand Group. The role focuses on financial crime analytics, model governance, and clear technical documentation.

You will collaborate with risk, tech and business teams, develop SAS/SQL/Python solutions, and support junior data scientists in skills development. The position is full-time in Johannesburg.

Qualifications

• Honours degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Actuarial Science, Engineering, Physics, or related field.
• 2+ years hands-on experience in developing analytical models (financial services preferred).
• Strong scripting skills in SAS, SQL and Python.
• Experience collaborating across multiple teams; AML/CFT familiarity advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement analytical models and governance for financial crime analytics (AML/CFT, transaction monitoring, sanctions screening).
• Translate technical solutions into actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.
• Document models and processes clearly for governance and audits.
• Collaborate with Front/Risk/Tech teams to drive model effectiveness and compliance and mentor juniors.
