Job summary

Badger Holdings (Pty) Ltd in George, Western Cape, is seeking an experienced Data Scientist to own machine learning projects from data preparation to deployment and monitoring.

You’ll build, validate and deploy models, explore data for patterns, and create dashboards that translate findings for business teams. The role is on-site, requiring 5+ years in insurance/financial services and hands-on ML with Python or R and SQL/Snowflake.

Qualifications

• A degree or honours qualification in data science.
• 5+ years’ experience in insurance or financial services.
• 5+ years of hands-on machine learning experience from data prep to deployment.
• Proven experience with Python or R, and SQL/Snowflake.
• Experience in claims modelling and survival analysis.
• Strong foundation in statistical modelling and time series forecasting.

Responsibilities

• Manage the full machine learning lifecycle, from preparing data and developing models to deployment, monitoring and ongoing improvement.
• Prepare, clean and transform data, and engineer features for modelling.

About The Role

• You’ll manage the full machine learning lifecycle, from preparing data and developing models to deployment, monitoring and ongoing improvement. You’ll work independently, take responsibility for your solutions and present findings clearly to business teams.

What you’ll do:

• Monitor model performance, investigate drift and retrain models when needed.
• Troubleshoot deployed solutions and maintain reliable pipelines.

What you’ll need:

• A degree or honours qualification in data science.
• At least 5 years’ experience in insurance or financial services.
• At least 5 years of hands-on machine learning experience, covering data preparation through to deployment.
• Proven experience with Python or R, and SQL/Snowflake.
• Experience in claims modelling and survival analysis.
• A strong foundation in statistical modelling and time series forecasting.

Experience that would be an advantage

Short-term insurance experience, exposure to machine learning platforms, and proficiency in BI tools such as Power BI, Qlik Sense or Tableau.
