Job summary

Sappi is seeking a Core Cutter to ensure continuous production by cutting cores to spec, loading and supplying winders, and maintaining stock accuracy. You will operate forklift equipment as needed and collaborate with the production team to uphold safety and quality standards.

The role requires at least a year of experience in pulp and paper manufacturing, with a Grade 12 education plus Maths and Physical Science (or N3 in Pulp and Paper).

Qualifications

• Matric (Grade 12) with Maths & Physical Science or N3 in Pulp and Paper.
• Minimum of one year relevant manufacturing experience within the Pulp and Paper industry.

Responsibilities

• Cut cores accurately to the required sizes and specifications for KLB and Newsprint winders.
• Load correctly sized cores into the designated core trolley compartments and issue them to winders and Wrapline.
• Offload, handle and store incoming cores, core plugs and steel tips; operate a forklift when required.
• Operate slotting and expanding machines to insert steel tips into core ends.
• Record all materials received and issued to winders and Wrapline for stock control and traceability.
• Cut core samples and submit to the Paper Laboratory for quality testing.
• Maintain a clean and safe working environment by cleaning bins, dust-extraction areas and surrounding waste-bin areas.

We’re on the lookout for a Core Cutter to ensure the continuous supply of correctly sized cores to the KLB and NP machines by manually cutting cores to the required specifications, loading and replenishing core supplies, and issuing core plugs and discs to support uninterrupted winder operations. The role also includes operating a forklift when required to load and unload materials safely and efficiently.

As a Core Cutter, you will be responsible for:

• Core Cutting: Cut cores accurately to the required sizes and specifications for KLB and Newsprint winders, including cutting inner and outer cores for special orders when required.
• Core Supply and Issuing: Load correctly sized cores into the designated core trolley compartments and issue them to the relevant winders and Wrapline to ensure an uninterrupted production supply.
• Material Handling and Storage: Offload, handle and store incoming cores, core plugs and steel tips safely, using a forklift when required.
• Core Preparation and Processing: Operate slotting and expanding machines to insert steel tips into core ends when required, ensuring cores are prepared according to operational requirements.
• Stock Control and Record-Keeping: Accurately record all materials received and issued to winders and Wrapline to maintain proper stock control and material traceability.
• Quality Control and Sampling: Cut core samples and submit them to the Paper Laboratory for testing to ensure compliance with the required quality standards.
• Housekeeping and Waste Management: Maintain a clean and safe working environment by cleaning the KLB and Newsprint core cutter reject bins, dust-extraction bins, work areas and surrounding waste-bin areas, and moving empty pallets to the designated pallet yard.
• Safety and Operational Compliance: Adhere strictly to all prescribed safety procedures when operating core-cutting equipment, machinery and forklifts, and carry out shift supervisor instructions, particularly during production shutdowns.
