Job summary

Marvel Placement Consultants is seeking an experienced Civil Construction Supervisor to lead on-site civil activities within mining or heavy infrastructure projects. You will coordinate contractor crews, review drawings, supervise earthworks and concrete works, and ensure safety, quality and schedule adherence on a site-based roster.

The role requires 8+ years of Civil construction experience, a relevant qualification, and strong knowledge of earthworks, drainage, and BMPs.

Qualifications

  • National Diploma, National N Diploma or recognised technical qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or related civil discipline.
  • Minimum 8 years' relevant civil construction experience in mining, infrastructure or heavy industrial projects.
  • Proven site supervision experience.
  • Experience supervising earthworks, concrete, roads, drainage, buried services and related civil works.
  • Strong knowledge of civil construction methods, workfront preparation and contractor supervision.
  • Experience interpreting civil drawings, specifications, survey data, work packs and method statements.
  • Experience with inspections, testing, quality control, non-conformance close-out and completion management.
  • Knowledge of earthworks, excavations, layerworks, concrete, reinforcement, formwork, roads, drainage and civil interfaces.
  • Experience with planning, quantity measurement, productivity monitoring and progress reporting.
  • Knowledge of SA mining, construction, OH&S and environmental legislation.
  • Experience in owner-team/EPCM/principal-contractor environments (advantage).
  • Experience on iron ore, mining infrastructure, process plant, bulk earthworks or materials-handling projects (advantage).
  • Bachelor/BTech in Civil Engineering or Construction Management (advantageous).
  • Professional registration with ECSA/SACPCMP or equivalent (advantageous).
  • Training in construction supervision, quality control or contract administration (advantageous).
  • South African driver’s licence (valid).
  • Medical fitness certificate for mine/site access (valid).
  • Additional training in Construction Regulations, excavation safety, temporary works, concrete technology or QC (advantageous).
  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Strong communication, leadership, problem-solving and contractor-management skills.
  • Willingness to work on a construction roster and remain site-based for the project duration.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily civil construction activities and coordinate contractor crews, plant, materials, access and interfaces.
  • Review civil work packs, drawings, method statements, temporary works, survey information and inspection and test plans.
  • Verify workfront readiness with approved drawings, setting-out, materials, plant, access, permits and interfaces.
  • Monitor civil construction activities for compliance with drawings, specs and tolerances.
  • Conduct and witness inspections and testing; manage hold and witness points.
  • Monitor quantities, productivity and progress against plans.
  • Provide field input into constructability reviews and address execution constraints.
  • Coordinate civil workfronts with structural, mechanical, electrical, piping, mining and operations.

Job description

  • Knowledge of applicable South African mining, construction, occupational health and safety and environmental legislation.
  • Experience working within an owner-team, EPCM or principal-contractor environment will be advantageous.
  • Previous experience on iron ore, mining infrastructure, process plant, bulk earthworks or materials-handling projects will be advantageous.
  • Bachelor's degree or BTech in Civil Engineering or Construction Management will be advantageous.
  • Professional registration with ECSA, SACPCMP or an equivalent recognised body will be advantageous.
  • Training in construction supervision, quality control or contract administration will be advantageous.
  • Valid South African driver's licence.

Roles & Responsibilities:
Civil Construction Supervision & Quality Assurance
  • Supervise daily civil construction activities and coordinate contractor crews, plant, materials, access and interfaces.
  • Review civil work packs, drawings, method statements, temporary works, survey information and inspection and test plans.
  • Verify workfront readiness, including approved drawings, setting-out, materials, plant, access, permits, services and interface clearances.
  • Monitor civil construction activities to ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, tolerances and standards.
  • Conduct and witness inspections and testing and ensure hold and witness points are appropriately managed.
  • Monitor civil quantities, productivity and progress against approved plans.
  • Provide field input into constructability reviews and identify practical execution constraints.
  • Coordinate civil workfronts and interfaces with structural, mechanical, electrical, piping, mining and operational activities.
SHE & Environmental Compliance
  • Ensure all civil construction activities comply with applicable SHE requirements, legislation and approved controls.
  • Stop unsafe or non-compliant work and escalate critical risks.
  • Lead and participate in pre-starts, toolbox talks, risk assessments, critical-control verification and safety inspections.
  • Verify contractor compliance with approved method statements, permits and task-specific controls.
  • Maintain effective housekeeping, barricading, access and excavation protection.
  • Identify and manage risks associated with excavations, earthworks, concrete, roads, drainage, services, temporary works and ground conditions.
  • Ensure environmental controls relating to clearing, topsoil, erosion, dust, water, waste, spills and rehabilitation are maintained.
Contractor & Workfront Management
  • Support civil contractor mobilisation, induction, workfront allocation and readiness verification.
  • Monitor contractor labour, plant, quantities, productivity, quality and progress.
  • Address field deviations, underperformance and non-compliance promptly.
  • Act as the day-to-day owner-team field interface for civil contractors and subcontractors.
  • Measure and verify installed civil quantities and completed works.
  • Maintain accurate site records supporting contract administration and claims avoidance.
  • Maintain daily diaries, manpower and plant records, progress quantities, photographs, redlines, quality records and completion evidence.
Planning, Reporting & Risk Management
  • Contribute to daily and weekly civil work planning, look-ahead schedules and workfront readiness reviews.
  • Identify civil construction risks and implement agreed mitigation measures.
  • Monitor weather, access, ground conditions, water management and other conditions affecting civil activities.
  • Identify productivity, progress and quality variances and contribute to root-cause analysis.
  • Implement agreed corrective actions and recovery measures.
  • Prepare concise daily and weekly reports covering safety, labour, plant, progress, quantities, quality, constraints and actions.
  • Provide accurate civil progress, quantity and productivity information to project controls.
  • Participate in constructability reviews, readiness reviews, site walkdowns, punch-list inspections and completion reviews.
Quantity, Scope & Change Management
  • Monitor contractor scope and field conditions to prevent unauthorised work, rework and scope growth.
  • Support the breakdown of civil scope into measurable work packages and control accounts.
  • Verify alignment between drawings, schedules, installed quantities and progress records.
  • Identify potential changes and maintain proper field-change control.
  • Provide field information for change requests and assess potential safety, quality and schedule impacts.
  • Support construction cost control through accurate quantity verification, productivity monitoring and change management.
Stakeholder & Project Coordination
  • Coordinate civil execution with engineering, survey, quality, SHE, project controls, operations readiness and environmental teams.
  • Facilitate the resolution of technical queries, construction constraints and interface issues.
  • Coordinate the availability, receipt, inspection, storage and use of civil materials, precast items and embedded components.
  • Maintain effective relationships with contractors, subcontractors, consultants, suppliers and other project stakeholders.
  • Provide relevant construction information and field support to stakeholders.
  • Support the Construction Manager and Project Manager in managing civil construction risks, constraints, quality and delivery.
  • Provide field input into engineering, completions, commissioning and operational-readiness activities.
