Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 10 years' relevant engineering and project experience, preferably within mining, minerals processing, industrial or infrastructure projects.
- Proven experience in project engineering, engineering management and multidisciplinary project execution.
- Professional registration with ECSA as a Professional Engineer will be highly advantageous.
- Proven experience managing engineering activities through design, procurement, construction and commissioning phases.
- Experience leading or coordinating multidisciplinary engineering and construction packages.
- Strong understanding of project scope, cost, schedule, quality, risk and technical deliverables.
- Experience reviewing and approving engineering designs, technical specifications, contractor proposals and engineering deliverables.
- Experience with brownfield and/or greenfield project environments.
- Strong understanding of engineering interfaces between mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, process and other project disciplines.
- Experience working with EPCM, project services, mining or owner-team environments.
- Previous experience within the mining, minerals processing, coal, iron ore or heavy industrial sectors will be advantageous.
- Experience with project controls, procurement, cost management and project reporting.
- Experience managing engineering and construction contractors and technical service providers.
- Strong knowledge of applicable engineering standards, legislation, safety requirements and industry best practice.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent project management qualification will be advantageous.
- Management or leadership development qualification will be advantageous.
- Proficient in MS Office, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
- Strong analytical, technical, leadership, communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- Valid South African driver's licence.
- Willingness to travel to project sites when required.
Roles & Responsibilities
Engineering Management & Technical Leadership
- Lead and coordinate engineering activities across multidisciplinary projects from concept, feasibility and detailed design through procurement, construction and commissioning.
- Provide technical leadership to engineering teams and ensure engineering deliverables meet project requirements.
- Review engineering designs, specifications, technical reports, calculations, drawings and other engineering deliverables.
- Ensure engineering solutions are practical, fit-for-purpose, safe and aligned with applicable standards and project requirements.
- Coordinate engineering interfaces between mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, process and other disciplines.
- Provide technical input into project planning, execution strategies and constructability reviews.
- Identify engineering risks, technical constraints and potential design or execution issues and ensure appropriate mitigation measures are implemented.
- Support technical decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.
Project Execution & Management
- Manage engineering and technical activities in line with approved scope, budget, schedule, quality and project objectives.
- Lead engineering inputs during project planning, procurement, construction and commissioning.
- Coordinate engineering resources, contractors, consultants and specialist service providers.
- Monitor progress against project milestones and identify potential delays or technical constraints.
- Review contractor and supplier proposals and provide technical recommendations.
- Support procurement activities through the preparation and review of technical specifications, tender documentation and technical evaluations.
- Monitor the technical performance of engineering and construction packages.
- Participate in project reviews, progress meetings, technical meetings and stakeholder engagements.
- Ensure effective coordination between engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning teams.
Project Controls, Cost & Reporting
- Provide engineering input into project budgets, cost estimates and execution schedules.
- Monitor project performance against scope, cost, schedule and quality requirements.
- Identify deviations and support the implementation of corrective and recovery actions.
- Provide accurate technical and project information for project controls and management reporting.
- Review project risks, opportunities, changes and technical impacts.
- Support change management, variation assessments and technical evaluations.
- Ensure appropriate engineering documentation, records and project controls are maintained.
- Contribute to project performance reporting for clients and senior management.
Procurement, Construction & Commissioning
- Provide technical support throughout the procurement and contractor appointment process.
- Review supplier and contractor documentation for compliance with project requirements.
- Provide engineering support during construction and resolve technical queries and site-related engineering issues.
- Participate in inspections, technical reviews, site walkdowns and construction progress assessments.
- Ensure engineering requirements are effectively communicated to contractors and construction teams.
- Support commissioning planning and execution and ensure engineering deliverables are completed prior to handover.
- Assist with punch-list management, completion activities and final project handover.
- Ensure lessons learned and project close-out information are captured and incorporated into future projects.
Client & Stakeholder Management
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with clients, consultants, contractors, suppliers and internal project teams.
- Act as a senior technical point of contact for engineering-related matters.
- Present technical information, project progress and engineering recommendations to stakeholders.
- Understand client requirements and ensure engineering deliverables are aligned with agreed project objectives.
- Manage technical queries and facilitate effective resolution of engineering and project issues.
- Participate in client meetings, project reviews, design reviews and progress meetings.
Safety, Quality & Compliance
- Ensure all engineering and project activities comply with applicable health, safety, environmental, quality and engineering requirements.
- Promote a strong safety culture throughout engineering and project execution activities.
- Ensure engineering designs and project deliverables comply with relevant legislation, standards, specifications and client requirements.
- Identify and manage technical and project risks throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support quality assurance and quality control processes across engineering and project execution.
- Ensure non-conformances, technical deviations and design issues are appropriately investigated and closed out.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering and project execution processes.
