Job summary

The President Hotel is seeking a motivated Commis Chef to join its professional kitchen team. You will assist with food preparation across sections, maintain mise en place, and follow recipes to ensure quality and presentation standards in a fast-paced 4/5-star hotel setting.

Ideal candidates have a recognised culinary qualification, at least 2 years in a professional kitchen, and the ability to work shifts, weekends and holidays. SA ID or valid work permit is required.

Qualifications

• Matric Certificate (Grade 12) and recognised culinary qualification are essential.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience in a professional kitchen.
• South African ID or valid work permit required.
• Previous experience as a Commis Chef in a hotel, restaurant or high-volume kitchen is preferred.
• Experience in a busy 4- or 5-star hotel is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Assisting with food preparation and cooking across different kitchen sections.
• Preparing and maintaining mise en place for service readiness.
• Following recipes, portion controls and presentation standards.
• Supporting senior chefs during busy service periods.
• Ensuring food meets quality, consistency and presentation standards.
• Maintaining clean, hygienic workstations at all times.
• Adhering to food safety, hygiene, HACCP and kitchen safety procedures.
• Assisting with stock rotation, storage and minimising waste.
• Communicating effectively with chefs and kitchen team members.
• Developing culinary knowledge through exposure to different kitchen sections.
• Taking initiative to improve speed and accuracy in culinary skills.
• Supporting the wider kitchen brigade to ensure smooth operations.

• Experience within a busy 4-star or 5-star hotel environment advantageous
• Good knowledge of food preparation, basic cooking techniques and kitchen operations
• Understanding of food safety, hygiene and HACCP standards
• Ability to follow recipes, portion controls and presentation standards accurately
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume kitchen environment
• Ability to work shifts, weekends and public holidays
• Professional grooming and a disciplined approach to kitchen operations
• South African ID or valid work permit
