Provide clinical orientation coordination, readiness verification, ongoing professional support and auditable quality assurance for agency nursing personnel deployed to contracted Western Cape Department of Health (PGWC) facilities. The facilitator is a registered professional nurse and works with each facility’s authorised clinical leadership; the role does not replace the facility’s clinical governance or grant independent permission to practice in a specialist area.
- Current South African Nursing Council (SANC) registration as a Professional Nurse; annual status independently verified and recorded.
- Relevant clinical experience across hospital settings and demonstrable ability to teach, supervise and assess within own competence.
- Experience in induction, clinical education, quality assurance and incident escalation; familiarity with public-sector hospital practice is advantageous.
- Sound understanding of nursing scopes of practice, patient safety, confidentiality, infection prevention and documentation.
- Ability to travel between facilities, maintain accurate digital records and communicate with nursing management.
- Additional specialty qualification or expertise is required for the facilitator to personally assess specialist competencies; otherwise assessment must be performed by a facility-authorised specialty assessor.
Key accountabilities
A. Pre-placement clinical readiness
- Verify identity, current SANC category/status, qualifications, experience and role/ward requirements in coordination with recruitment and the facility.
- Check required training and evidence (e.g. life support, where specified by the facility); flag gaps and prevent unsupported claims of competency.
- Confirm allocation, shift, contact person and facility-specific induction arrangements before commencement.
B. Foundation and site orientation
- Coordinate a documented induction for every nurse, including agency obligations, facility access, reporting lines, ward location, emergency codes, escalation, infection prevention, medication and records policies.
- Use the facility’s current approved materials and obtain nurse and authorised facility sign-off.
C. Ward and specialist orientation
- Apply ward-specific checklists and identify high-risk competencies for ICU, emergency/trauma, psychiatry, theatre, maternity, neonatal and other areas.
- Arrange supervised exposure, demonstration and assessment by an authorised competent assessor where required.
- Record restrictions and do not release a nurse for independent specialist duties until the facility authorises them.
D. Ongoing support and monitoring
- Conduct planned visits and check-ins; respond to nurse and ward-manager feedback and emerging training needs.
- Coordinate remediation, reassignment or removal from duties where patient safety is at risk, following facility and AP escalation pathways.
E. Quality, incident and governance
- Maintain orientation and competency evidence, version-controlled checklists, training registers and expiry alerts.
- Escalate clinical incidents immediately through facility procedures and notify AP according to contract; preserve confidentiality and do not independently investigate beyond authority.
- Report trends, outstanding actions and completion metrics to AP and authorised PGWC contacts.
Deliverables and reporting
- Individual nurse readiness file and induction/ward orientation checklist.
- Specialist competency evidence or facility-authorised sign-off and restrictions register.
- Orientation schedule, attendance log, outstanding-actions register and refresher/re-orientation log.
- Monthly dashboard and documented liaison with hospital nursing management.
