Job summary

Farmwise Marketing seeks a By-Products & Waste Specialist to develop and implement waste management strategies, maximise by-product value, and improve sustainability across production. You will lead waste segregation, recycling initiatives, and contractor coordination while driving cost optimisation and compliance.

The role requires 3–5 years in manufacturing, familiarity with HACCP/GMP, and strong MS Office skills.

Qualifications

• Minimum national senior grade 12 matric certificate or equivalent NQF qualification.
• 3–5 years’ experience in a manufacturing/production environment (preferably food/FMCG).
• Experience in waste or environmental management, including segregation and contractor management.
• Experience in lean manufacturing practises.
• Exposure to HACCP, GMP, or similar food safety systems.
• Experience working with external waste service providers.
• Proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook).

• Manage and monitor External Contractors to ensure safety, service quality and cost-effectiveness.
• Provide leadership and development for the By-Products & Waste team.

The Role

The By-Products & Waste Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving Farmwise's waste management and by-product recovery strategy. The role ensures that all waste streams generated throughout the business are effectively managed to maximise value recovery, minimise environmental impact, reduce operational costs and ensure full compliance with legislative, customer, and food safety requirements.

The incumbent is accountable for converting waste into value by identifying commercial opportunities for by-products, improving waste segregation, reducing landfill disposal, increasing recycling, and supporting Farmwise's sustainability and circular economy objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement effective By-Product Management strategies to maximise the recovery and commercial value of production by-products.

Lead Waste Management operations, ensuring efficient segregation, handling, storage, recycling, and lawful disposal of all waste streams.

Drive Resource Recovery initiatives to minimise waste to landfill and maximise the reuse and recycling of materials.

Champion Sustainability Initiatives that support Farmwise's environmental objectives, customer requirements, and circular economy practices.

Identify and implement Cost Optimisation opportunities through waste reduction, process improvements, and efficient resource utilisation.

Generate measurable Revenue from by-products and recyclable materials through value recovery initiatives and commercial partnerships.

Ensure full Environmental Compliance with applicable legislation, customer standards, permits, and internal policies.

Plan, coordinate, and optimise all Operational Activities relating to waste management and by-product handling to support uninterrupted production.

Manage and monitor External Contractors and Service Providers to ensure contractual compliance, service excellence, and cost-effectiveness.

Provide effective Leadership and Development of the By-Products & Waste team, fostering a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.

Prepare, monitor, and control the departmental Operating and Capital Budgets, ensuring prudent financial management.

Lead Continuous Improvement projects that improve operational efficiency, reduce waste generation, and enhance business sustainability.

Produce accurate Operational Reports and Performance Analytics to support informed decision-making and strategic planning.

Requirements

Minimum national senior grade 12 matric certificate, or equivalent NQF qualification

A relevant tertiary qualification in Environmental Management, Waste Management, Production/Operations Management, Occupational Health and Safety, or related field will be advantageous.

3–5 years’ experience in a manufacturing/production environment (preferably food/FMCG).

Experience in waste or environmental management, including segregation and contractor management.

Experience in lean manufacturing practises.

Exposure to HACCP, GMP, or similar food safety systems.

Experience working with external waste service providers.

Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
