Job summary

Papenfus Retail Consultants CC is seeking a Butchery Production Assistant to support the team in meat preparation, processing, packaging, and display in line with Pick n Pay’s hygiene and quality standards.

The role involves assisting butchers and blockmen, maintaining a clean, safe workspace, and delivering excellent customer service at the counter. Previous experience in meat production is preferred, with shift flexibility in a retail setting.

Qualifications

• Education: Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification is required.
• Experience: Minimum 1 year in a butchery or food production environment.
• Technical knowledge: Basic knowledge of meat processing, sausage production, and cold chain control.
• Food safety & hygiene: Understanding of hygiene, sanitation, and food safety standards (HACCP advantageous).
• Physical requirements: Capable of manual handling, standing work, and cold-room conditions.
• Availability: Flexible hours, including shifts, weekends, and public holidays.

Responsibilities

• Assist in trimming, cutting, and portioning meat products under supervision.
• Support Butchers and Blockmen in production of standard retail cuts and portions.
• Prepare meat trays, displays, and bulk orders according to Pick n Pay specifications.
• Maintain FIFO and correct product rotation.
• Ensure hygiene and cold chain standards are met.
• Report quality, temperature or contamination concerns to supervisor.
• Operate meat saws, slicers, mincers, mixers, and vacuum sealers safely.
• Label, price, and package finished products per store policies.
