Job summary

MC Design is seeking an experienced Boilermaker to join our team in Durban. You will fabricate, assemble and install structural steelwork per approved drawings and project specs.

Ideal candidates will have 5+ years’ post-trade experience, automotive sector exposure, and the ability to read engineering drawings. Overtime and site work across client sites are expected, with emphasis on safety and quality.

Qualifications

• Qualified and Trade Tested Boilermaker – essential.
• Minimum 5 years’ post-trade experience as a Boilermaker.
• Proven experience within the automotive manufacturing sector, particularly in manufacturing and installation.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret engineering and manufacturing drawings, specifications and job instructions.
• Measure, mark, cut, shape, drill and prepare steel plates, sections and components.
• Manufacture and assemble structural steelwork, frames, supports, platforms, brackets, chutes, guards, handrails and related components.
• Fit, position, align and secure components accurately prior to welding and final assembly.
• Perform tack welding and welding where appropriately qualified and authorised.
• Grind, clean and finish manufactured components to the required standard.
• Install and erect manufactured steelwork and components at sites.
• Verify measurements, alignment and tolerances to approved drawings and quality requirements.
• Identify and report drawing discrepancies, dimensional issues or required modifications.

Job description

We are looking for an experienced Boilermaker to join our dynamic team at MC Design. The successful candidate will be responsible for the manufacturing, fabrication, assembly and installation of structural steelwork and related components in accordance with approved engineering drawings, specifications and project requirements.

The Boilermaker will be required to maintain high standards of workmanship, dimensional accuracy and quality while ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently and within project deadlines.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience within an automotive manufacturing and installation environment, be able to accurately interpret engineering drawings and work effectively as part of a project team.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Read and interpret engineering and manufacturing drawings, specifications and job instructions.
• Measure, mark, cut, shape, drill and prepare steel plates, sections and components.
• Manufacture and assemble structural steelwork, frames, supports, platforms, brackets, chutes, guards, handrails and related components.
• Fit, position, align and secure components accurately prior to welding and final assembly.
• Perform tack welding and welding where appropriately qualified and authorised.
• Grind, clean and finish manufactured components to the required standard.
• Install and erect manufactured steelwork and components at company, project and client sites.
• Verify measurements, dimensions, alignment and tolerances to ensure work complies with approved drawings and quality requirements.
• Identify and report drawing discrepancies, dimensional issues or required modifications before proceeding.
• Safely operate and maintain fabrication tools, machinery and equipment for which authorised.
• Minimise material wastage and ensure proper care of company tools, equipment and materials.
• Comply with all company, client and project health, safety and PPE requirements.
• Maintain good housekeeping and immediately report hazards, incidents or defective equipment.
• Work effectively with supervisors, riggers, welders, fitters and other project personnel to meet project deadlines.
• Work overtime, shifts and at different project/client sites where operationally required.
• Perform other reasonable duties associated with the Boilermaker position.

Requirements

• Qualified and Trade Tested Boilermaker – essential.
• Minimum 5 years’ post-trade experience as a Boilermaker.
• Proven experience within the automotive manufacturing sector, particularly in manufacturing and installation.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering/manufacturing drawings, specifications and measurements accurately.
• Competent in measuring, marking, cutting, drilling, grinding, fitting and assembling steel components.
• Welding experience and relevant welding competency/certification will be advantageous.
• Good understanding of dimensional tolerances, alignment and quality requirements.
• Ability to safely operate relevant hand tools, power tools and fabrication equipment.
• Strong understanding of health and safety requirements within manufacturing and client-site environments.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a project/site team.
• Willing and able to work overtime, shifts and at various client/project sites when operationally required.
