Job summary

Placements24 is seeking an Automotive Powertrain Engineer for our client in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal. You will design and optimize powertrain systems, from engines to hybrid units, focusing on performance, efficiency and emissions compliance.

You'll conduct simulations, tests, and data analyses, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure feasible production launches. A strong engineering foundation, relevant experience, and willingness to relocate are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Automotive Engineering.
• 3–5 years in automotive powertrain design and development.
• Strong understanding of internal combustion engines, transmissions, or electric/hybrid powertrains.
• Experience with powertrain simulation software (GT-POWER, AMESim, AVL CRUISE).
• Experience with data acquisition systems and analysis tools.
• Knowledge of engine calibration and control strategies.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to work in a team and manage project timelines.
• Valid driver's license; willing to relocate to Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop powertrain components and systems for performance and efficiency.
• Run simulations (CFD/FEA) to validate powertrain designs.
• Plan and execute powertrain testing and validation on dynos and vehicles.
• Analyze test data and implement design modifications.
• Collaborate with manufacturing to ensure feasibility and launch support.
• Troubleshoot powertrain issues during development and post-launch.
• Ensure compliance with environmental and performance regulations.
• Stay updated on powertrain tech, fuels, and electrification.
• Prepare technical docs, reports, and presentations for reviews.
• Work with electronics, software, and vehicle integration engineers.
