Placements24 is seeking an experienced Automation Engineer for a leading high‑volume manufacturing site in Cape Town, Western Cape. You will design, implement, and support PLC/HMI systems and robotics to improve the efficiency and reliability of automated production lines.

The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics, 5+ years in industrial automation, and hands-on experience with Siemens S7 and Allen‑Bradley PLCs, PMAC/ servo drives, and SCADA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
• 5+ years in industrial automation engineering.
• Proficiency in programming multiple PLC platforms (e.g., Siemens S7, Allen-Bradley) and HMI software.
• Hands-on experience with industrial robots and integration.
• Strong understanding of electrical systems, motor controls, and sensors.
• Experience with VFDs and pneumatic/hydraulic systems.
• Excellent troubleshooting and live production problem-solving.
• Ability to read and interpret complex electrical drawings and manuals.
• Strong communication and teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Design, program, and commission PLC and HMI systems for new and existing production machinery.
• Integrate and troubleshoot robotic systems (e.g., FANUC, KUKA) and other automated equipment.
• Develop and maintain electrical schematics, control logic, and system documentation.
• Perform root cause analysis on automation failures and implement solutions.
• Collaborate with mechanical engineers and production teams to ensure seamless integration.
• Conduct regular maintenance and performance checks on automated equipment.
• Implement process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce downtime.
• Train staff on operation and troubleshooting of automated systems.
• Stay current with automation tech including IoT, AI, and machine vision.
• Ensure projects comply with industry standards and safety regulations.

• Strong understanding of electrical systems, motor controls, and sensor technologies.
• Experience with VFDs, servo drives, and pneumatic/hydraulic systems.

• Knowledge of SCADA systems and data acquisition is a plus.
