Job summary

Alta du Toit Aftercare Centre in Bellville, Western Cape, is seeking a qualified Occupational Therapist to contribute to a holistic development programme for residents with intellectual disabilities and related conditions. The role involves developing, implementing and evaluating activity and wellness programmes, and delivering therapy to residents and day workers.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in Occupational Therapy with HPCSA registration.
• Valid driver’s licence and independent transport.
• Minimum 2 years experience with implementing work development and therapy programmes.
• Special interest/experience in intellectual disability and mental/physical health.
• Experience in developing and evaluating therapy and stimulation programmes.
• Experience in prescribing assistive devices and wheelchair seating; training caregivers.

Responsibilities

• Conduct holistic assessments and develop stimulation programmes; set goals and therapy plans.
• Assist with room modifications and prescription of mobility aids and ADL equipment.
• Provide clinical assessments and treatment for cognitive, emotional, ADL, physical and rehabilitation needs.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to optimise group therapy, recreation and work activities.
• Supervise Occupational Therapy students.

Job description

Alta du Toit Aftercare Centre (Closing date: 02 October 2026) has one vacancy for an Occupational Therapist.

Purpose Of The Job

The purpose of the job is to ensure a contribution towards the therapeutic development programme, contributing to the holistic functioning of persons with an Intellectual Disability. The role is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of diverse activity/ wellness/ skills development programmes. You will work with patients with a range of conditions, including intellectual impairment, neurological conditions, ASD etc.

Responsibilities Include

• Conducting regular holistic assessments and treatments of the clients, including but not limited to developing stimulation programmes, assess and report on residents’ functional abilities and therapy needs as well as the develop of individual goals and therapy plans.
• Provide support with room modifications (complex and simple), equipment prescription (including mobility aids, positioning support, bathroom aids and seating) and assistive technology (including self-care, low tech and learning aids).
• Clinical assessments and treatment for residents and day workers in cognitive-, emotional-, ADLs-, and physical- and rehabilitation needs.
• Working with the other employees to ensure that the training opportunities offered through group therapy, recreational and work activities are used optimally towards developing clients to their full potential.
• Supervision of Occupational Therapy students.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team consisting of Social Workers, Nurses, Psychologists, etc.
• To be an effective leader, change agent and advocate for persons with a disability.

Requirements

• Tertiary qualification in Occupational Therapy with proof of prefessional registration with HPCSA.
• Valid driver’s licence with independent transport.
• A minimum of 2 (two) years experience with implementing work development and skills programmes as well as therapeutic assessments and treatments.
• Special interest and/ or experience in treatment applicable to intellectual disability, mental and physical health.
• Experience in creating and implementing therapy and stimulation programmes.
• Experience in evaluation and prescription of assistive devices, including but not limited to wheelchairs, walking frames and ADL equipment.
• Experience in wheelchair seating and implementation of neuro-developmental techniques.
• Experience in providing training and mentorship to caregivers and colleagues.
• Computer literacy, good administration skills and the ability to work independently. Strong interpersonal, communication and organisational skills.
